Post quick tech question

About to change the oil in my 87 coupe, it has the G50 gearbox, does anyone know the oil capasity of the G50?

My haynes only covers models up to 1985 and the pelican search is only covering the last few weeks posts, im stuck.

Guessing that it is 3L capasity?

Apart from getting a 10mm hex drive to take the filler and drain plugs out, is there any other advice to keep in mind?

Mike,

According to '84-'87 spec book ... 3 liters for both 915 AND G50! Bentley says 3.4 liters/3.6 US qt. for G50 ... maybe a typo in the spec book!

Hello

There is a 950 and a G50 trany.

If I remember correct the 950 trany was MY 87 while the G50 came 88.

The 950 had 3,2 Liter first filling and 3L changing.

The G50 had 3,5 L first filling and 3,25 L changing.

Don´t nail me this could also have beee the Turbo G50 specs.

SAE 75/90 API GL5 Mil 21?? B

Sealing rings under plug 40-50 Nm
Sometimes they are hard to get out ( Vice Grip ) be prepared to get a new plug.

Check if you have the crossbar betwen trany and heatexhanger on the driver side. They came in 88 and had been retrofitet

SUGGEST YOU USE REDLINE AS TRANS FLUID. REDLINE HAS A "RECOMMENDED BLEND" OF TWO OF THEIR SYNTHETIC GEAR OILS TO USE. I BOUGHT FROM AN OFF-ROAD SHOP NAMED MCKENZIES IN FULLERTON CALIF & CHANGED THE GEARLUBE. IT MADE AN IMMEDIATE DIFFERENCE ON SHIFTING.

well 2 1/2 l came out and 2 1/2 went in, car on ramps at rear guess something to do with angle on gear box.

Those plugs were extremely tight, took advice of Porsche world magazine and started with the filler plug (just in case)

Also contrary to the magazine article it was easy to get 1L bottle up higher than filler plug and therefore empty entire bottle.

Used semi synthetic , and there is definately a big improvement in shifting.

Also to oppertunity to replace ground strap to tranny, existing one completley rotten. It may be my imagination but performance slightly better.

Sorry no lead as to mech in west of scot, am in first 6 months of p ownership not needed one yet ( touch huge piece on wood!)

Don't you think it would have been better to have the car level, drain, and then fill it until fresh oil spilled out of the filler plug? You really can't be sure your gearbox has the correct amount in it. It may have been low to begin with.

doug i hear what you say, but, 2 1/2 is all she would take, i filled it until poured back out the filler hole.

As to getting the car level jacked car up at front while on ramps at rear. not perfect i know but i can live with 1/2 l of existing oil in gbox.

I believe that the 950 and G50 are the same. All the parts stuff that I have seen show the G50 transmission has having internal designation numbers of 950.

I believe that the factory only recommends using synthetic tranny oils in these G50. Has something to do with a special synchro design they have in there, or something like that... I can't seem to recall off the top of my head, and my reference book is at the shop...
