MSD vs. Red Ball vs. Delta Mark 10b
Ol' Ivory has a period installed Redball CD unit that fed the ignition points. Being 30+ years old, I think it's cooked. I understand that the MSD require a tach adapter or the tach gets sent to Hollywood/Palo Alto for conversion, which add to the cost.
I have a Delta Mark 10b that probably needs servicing and someone offered to rebuild it for about $150. Since the Delta Mark 10b is more or less "period correct" does it make sense to do this versus buying a MSD unit for about the same cost? If you think MSD is the way to go, which would you recommend? Thanks!

I had a Delta Mark 10b on my '67 911S that I eventually replaced with a Mallory unit and later with a MSD 6A CD unit. I can't remember why I replaced the Delta unit, but it was old technology and didn't provide the spark of the MSD. In my opinion, I wouldn't waste any money on it because much better systems are out there now. I opted for the less expensive MSD 6A instead of the MSD 6AL (with rev limiter) because I retained the stock 7300 rpm rev limiter in the Bosch distributor, plus the pills needed for the MSD 6AL were extra cost. You will need the tach adapter if you go with the MSD but it is no big deal to install. The one problem I had with the MSD is that I burned up a couple of stock coils and had to use the correct MSD coil for the CD unit.
I now have a Crane HI-6 (with the digital rev limiter) with a matched Crane coil and Pertronix electronic ignition unit in the '67 S distributor and couldn't be happier. Rod |
