Missed another
Well number 5 sold, I have been trying to find a 911 for about 2 months now. I get a lead, but either it doesn't check out or my distance from the car just screws things up.
I question, get photos, try to arrange for inspection and the car gets sold. I was even at the point that I arranged for pickup and the guy sold it that day even after verbal agreement. Anybody have any tips on long distance purchase? Frustrated!!! Barrier |

I'm looking for '83-'84 911. Couple of years either way depending upon condition, mileage and price. Originally I was looking for an SC exclusively but the advice of members on this BBS have pushed me to the Carrera as well. I can handle one that needs a clutch, tensioners, brakes,A/C, carpet, etc. I don't want heavy engine or Transmission work, just no time or desire at this point.

One more thing, I don't even mind if the car has a Salvage title ( stolen recovery not flood or accident) as long as it was a while ago and numbers match, and the title is now clear. However I don't want a "put-together" from parts. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

My only suggestion would be patience. Two months is a very short amount of time to be looking -- you'll have many times that amount to kick yourself if you jump at a car that later proves to be a lemon. And many (if not most_ of the older 911s on the market are lemons. Rust, neglect and engine wear make compelling reasons to sell a car. And 911s are charismatic enough so that there are always eager idiots lining up to buy them. Take your time, let a few "perfect" examples slip through your fingers. There will always be more of them. Eventually, you'll find your automotive soul mate.
There are a lot of threads on this board like this one: http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/005581.html that show what you stand to lose if you get tricked into a car with chronic problems. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 02-01-2001).] |

Try a US Marshal auction. I got my 83 911SC Euro/Cab for $12,100.00 with 60,000 miles, big flares, whale tail, Etoile 17 inch wheels, great stereo and wood dash and steering wheel. This auction was local in the newspaper. They have a web site under the department of justice/usmarshall:

While I would love to sway you to the lighter and faster SC....
I just saw an 84 Carrera coupe in the newspaper here in Fort Collins, CO. I happened to call (it was a slow night) and got the following info: White with tan leather 115K original miles One owner since new Dealer maintained Tranmission opened at 45K with upgraded ratios installed Autothority Chip 2nd set of Fuchs with studded snows included $17K -- Sellers sounds anxious to unload--He is retiring and getting spousal pressures to get rid of it. The owner did happen to say he drove it in all 4 seasons, which, in Colorado means rock chips, and lots of them, but who knows, I didn't see the car nor ask about this. However, Colorado means dry climate and no rust. Anyway, just thought I would put in my $0.02 Send me an e-mail at nickshu@yahoo.com if you want his name and phone #. Barrier I always advertise "to buy", that way there is no competion and you can take your time with pre purchase checks etc.

Bill is right on the money.
When I was looking for apartments in Seattle, I put ads in the local gazettes: Wallingford Journal, Fremont Times, you get the picture. "Working student seeks quiet mother-in-law". Worked the charm. I'd just wait for the calls and go out to look at units that were my look only. Do the same for Porsche shopping and you are golden. Good advice Bill. Jw |

About a year and a half ago I bought my car, an 87 Carrera Coupe with 21,000 from a guy in Pennsylvania who specializes in used Porsches. He seems to deal with cars in excellent condition and his prices are fair for what your getting.
I found him to be exceptionally honest. In my case I lost out on the first car that I looked at because I took a day to think about it because I had another appointment set up for the next day. He called me as soon as he got the car that I eventually bought from him. His website is www.aicauto.com You might want to check it out. Russell |

Patience. I have wished for it all my life and now that my hair is developing platinum highlights, I have some. Patience is delicious. Timing is EVERYTHING!

Although dealers may have nice cars, I just cannot afford their markup. I think private party is the way to go.
