Pre-89 911 Parts Availability

What is going on?

Is Porsche not replenishing the inventory of pre-89 911 parts? I tried to order some simple sheet metal parts from Porsche and they are NLA. Used to be you could get anything for any year.

Places like Mid America Motorworks (aka Tweeks) is not buying parts from their suppliers and it doesn't look good for the future. So their inventory is very low on Porsche parts. They said if it isn't on their web site, they don' t have it.

Is Pelican having similar issues?

Good! Now buy our 911 SC "Grab Bag" and get this stuff out of our shop, before I change my mind and hoard it!

There was a thread (started by Wayne?) regarding this that went on in some detail about this problem but I can not find it. Does anyone have a trick to finding it and is this issue still getting worse from what listers here can tell? As an FYI, I was talking to a local shop here regarding availability of parts for older models and he emphatically stated it was getting very difficult and worse all the time.
I'm assuming Porsche's financials troubles are not going to help the situation either.

I remember at the time it was blown out of proportion. I talked to my local dealer back then and he confirmed as much.

With Porsche's current problems.... dunno..?

I found that there is nothing I cannot get for my SC, right here in the For Sales column. And if one day I cannot get something for my SC, then that will be the day when I chop it up and put it up for sale piece by piece. I am sure it will be worth millions of dollars.

With the pinch by the parts suppliers there may be some issues. I certify many of the automotive suppliers out there and they are really hurting, not making much, and not getting paid by their customers. This could pinch the supply of older parts that do not move as quickly as they have all had such orders reduced or eliminated. Many suppliers are so cut back they are at 20% or less of workforce from a year ago.

That said, I also know some folks at both Kolbenschmidt Bosch, and Mahle thru my work, maybe I should give them a call...

So, the 'panic' 3 years ago wasn't justified I guess

Just to add another comment...I was at the Porsche dealer nearest me here in Dallas and the guy I talked to was truly trying to be helpful but he freely admitted they don't carry much of anything for the older air cooled models. It'd be great to get some insite from those in the business that can share some facts on this matter, i.e. Wayne or JW. BTW, the conversation I had with the local shop was in the last couple of months or so. Their focus is the air cooled models so they live and breath this stuff like us...most (not all) of the Porsche dealers are focused on 996/Boxster repairs, like replacing the water coolerd model's engines!

Actually there is a of of stuff that is NLA, and a lot of things that are still available are getting VERY expensive compared to a year or two ago.

I'll give our favorite example.... check out part number 964-565-002-01-707-OEM.

since buying a VW Vanagon Westy, I have discovered that parts for that 1986 from VW are spendy and often NLA -- a much worse situtation than P AG parts for my 1973 911.

Porsche deserves kudos for supporting us as long as they have, tho I wish they would do it better and longer...
