Looking for inexpensive exhust system.
Hello all,
I have a 73 911 with and 1980 3.0 SC engine installed and my mechanic tells me that I need a whole new exhust system (EVERYTHING). I am not made of money so Im hoping there is an inexpensive option out there compared to the $1,000.00 + prices I have been seeing in the cataloges. Side note question: I am dealing with electrical problems (BATTERY DRAIN) while the car is parked and turned off. Since this is a "swaped engine" my mechanic doesnt want to mess with it. I dont know what to do because I dont know if this thing has a computer or CIS or electonic injection or what else.... Are there any good books I may be able to pickup at barns and noble or something. Thanks a "BILLION" Kenneth Ebenstein WWW.CARWRECKS.ORG COMMING SOON: WWW.PORSCHE911.ORG |

Your best option performance and price wise is to retrofit/install a used stock 74 or earlier system. Find a non-rusty set of heat exchangers and a factory early muffler. According to Bruce Anderson (any many 911 owners who've done it), it really gives the SC a kick. You can probably find the whole setup for a few hundred bucks.
The SSI stainless exchangers are fantastic, but as you noted they are $800-1000/pair, and that does NOT include the muffler which is another $300-600 for a quality unit. Plus, for your SC motor I think you need to change an oil line or two for clearance, unless you were already running the early type exhaust before. As an aside, if you did or plan to register the domain porsche911.org, be prepared to get a "love letter" from Porsche AG or PCNA "asking" you to cease and desist...They are VERY aggressive about use of their name and trademarks on the 'net. I picked up a pre-74 exhaust system, with OEM muffler for $400. All in great condition. I just took a wire brush to them and sprayed header paint and they look brand new. I also had purchase the oil lines and went with all new mounting nuts for a cost of about $150. Sounds like you may benefit from the same. There are plenty out there so just be patient until a deal comes by.

Ken,
Sorry, I just sold a very nice set of pre-74 exchangers for $275. They are out there, keep looking. Call used places such as Carquip in Boulder, CO (www.carquip.com) or Parts Heaven in CA. Best of Luck. Nick. ------------------ __________ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe |
