Question Fan belt tension problem

Car is a '87 3.2, with no engine mods (yet). I installed a rebuilt OEM alternator early '08/late '07, without issues and using the original fan and other parts.

I recently installed a new fan belt and no matter where I put the shims the fan belt is still quite under- tensioned.

By "under-tensioned" I mean at least an inch of deflection with very low force applied laterally to the belt.

Tried another new fan belt - same problem. And yes, I am using the correct number of pulley shims. The fan belts were purchased from our host and certainly appear correct.

Can anyone tell me what the pulley center-to-center distance is supposed to be for the fan belt?

Can anyone tell me the correct height above the surrounding fan hub (and/or other applicable geometry) for the fan-side pulley half?

For our '86 3.2

Porsche Part # is 999.192.176.50

9.5mm X 710mm

I used two shims between the pulley halves.

The belt is very tight.

Good luck,

Gerry

Make sure the oblong rectangle "hole" of one of the pulley halves ....lines up properly and engages the corresponding male piece when the two pulley halves come together. This always went well for me until the very last time I did this and for some reason I couldn't ( easily) get the two halves to index properly against one another. If the twom pieces dont fit correctly, you will likely have loose belts.
