Bad Coil?
What are the symptoms of a bad coil? My car is running like **** and the only thing that isn't new on the engine is the coil..... It is running on 4 cylinders even after cleaning the carbs, adjusting valves, changing plugs.......and there is an audible random "tic....tic..tic..tic......tic", it sounds electrical, like a spark from the plug, and is coming from the Dizzy/ Coil area.
Any ideas?

That "tic..tic...tic...might be spark, arcing to ground from the dizzy cap, coil wire, plug wires, etc.
Start it up, at night in the garage, with the lights off and see if you have a light show. Regards, Al

Not sure on a Porsche but in my Audi, (95 S6, with MTM chip + RS2 goodies) a bad coil resulted in a missfire under load (especially under boost, as the car has a turbo). It was a very distinct feeling. Only when the coil has really failed does the miss it appear at idle.
Hope this helps and good luck. --- Tom '75 targa |

did you find the problem?

Did you replace the coil? If so, did it solve the problem?

I had a bad rotor (rev limiting) that was doing that to me. The plastic holding the rear limiting contact was cracked and as the rotor sped up it would randomly make contact with a plug and short.

If the ticking noise is coming from the coil area, it could be the coil itself, or the lead wire from the dizzy to the coil. Sounds like something is cracked or shorting out.

Hey,
Check your coil by removing it and shaking like a can of coke, you should hear the sloshing of the oil inside. eric

Often when the coil fails it get seriously hot.
You could wrap it with a cold wet shop towel and see if the misfire goes away. |
