Can you hear the front oil cooler fan on a Carrera?

With the engine running, I can't tell. If I leave the key on, does the fan blow with the engine stopped once the oil lines are hot? Which way does the air flow when the fan is operating, forward or toward the wheel?

As you can see, in almost 3 years of Carrera ownership, I have done little. I need to get up to speed on this car or sell it.

Must be a soft fan. I felt under the fender with my hand right at the rock guard louvers and did not feel a lot of heat coming out of the louvers. Some, but not a lot.

I guess I'll stick a candle in there.

The Boxster sounds like a street sweeper in front.

Milt,

The fan does not run when engine is off (no value in that -since only small about of risidual oil is contained in front radiator).

It's not really that 'soft' and when it does run the oil temperature has to be above 110 deg C for the thermostatic switch to activate the fan ...

You can get a lower temperature switch from the host (made for BMW)

Milt,

Vash is correct.

Also, I'm not sure the the 88 3.2's had a fan.

Our '86 had a radiator type cooler but no fan.

I added a Turbo oil cooler/fan with the oil temp sensor
to activate the fan.

However, the stock Porsche sensor activates the fan @ 248F.

Too hot!!!Keeps the mechanics busy.........

I use the Nason 197F sensor.

The fan activates @210F and de-activates @200F.

Good luck,

Gerry

I can tell when my fan turns on. my switch is bad so the fan comes whenever it feels like it. I'm not sure i hear the fan but can feel the vibration....maybe the fan bearings are bad. it was annoying so i disconnected the fan

The '88s have a fan. When the fan is on a lot of air comes out the bottom, under the oil cooler. It can be heard clearly when standing near the right fender but it is hard to hear when sitting in the car with the engine on. The stock thermoswitch that turns the fan on should be replaced with the BMW part or another switch that turns the fan on at a cooler temp. There is a thread that lists the part numbers for several switches that activate at different temps.

88's absolutely have a fan. I did the bypass mod so I can turn it on when the temp needle starts to creep up, rather than wait for it to get too hot. I can hear it clearly when I turn it on.

Hi Guys,
Not to hi-jack but does the 87 Carrera have a fan? Was the fan first introduced in 88?

My 87 has a fan, it seems that the oil will go the front cooler first.. if that doesn't bring the temps down then fan will come on as temp triggers the fan switch (the above post seems right for temp to trigger fan). Letting the car idle for a long time will trigger the fan, while diving I doubt it comes on at all. The higher the RPM the more cooling, in the summer if I drive it like a sedan my temps are higher then keeping the RPMs above 3k plus its more fun to drive.

Thanks.

Jim Sims posted these part numbers in another thread.

82 degree Celsius switch BW-61-31-1-364-272-82

91 degree Celsius switch BW-61-31-1-364-272-91

99 degree Celsius switch BW-61-31-1-364-273

I installed the 99 degree Celsius switch and wish I went with the 91 degree switch.

Sorry... I was away from the List

Here is the BMW Pelican part number for the switch (99 deg C) that is often used as an alternate to Porsche 110 deg C

The stock Porsche switch activates at about 240 degF....near or at the red zone of the gauge. most people don't notice the fan running because most never get the temps up there.
