Separating Transmission from Engine
Well the engine came out of the car easier than I thought. The furniture dolly is a great idea. Now I am a bit lost. My Haynes manual gives a description on how to separate the tranny from the engine. I screwed in the bolts to the rivets as directed, but have no idea how to get the release fork off the throw out bearing. The book says "rotate bearing 90 degrees. I did this but still can't see a way to get it off the bearing. The Pelican article which shows removing the engine without the transmission doesn't even discuss this. Can I just separate the tranny from the engine? Hope you guys have an answer cause I don't want to screw things up at this stage of the game.

Kurt,
That section of Haynes only applies to '70-'71 models with the '911' version of the old 901 transaxle. For the 915 all you have to do is take the snap ring off the clutch cable arm, then pull/pry that arm off carefully. Then wrap the splines in a couple of rags and rotate the arm clockwise from the bottom (opposite direction that pulling the clutch cable would normally move it) with the engine bolts/studs all removed and the trans should come apart very easily. You will be pushing against the throwout bearing slightly, then the engagement arm will swing out of the way and the engine/clutch will be free to exit! You may be able to look in that vent hole on the upper driver's side of the bellhousing with a penlight. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
