S Calipers dust seal help.
Hey this may sound like a stupid question. But I cant get that snap ring on my dust shield seal. Its too damn big. I am thinking, it needs to be a perfect circle fully expanded. but no go.. Also while am thinking about it . Did you know that you cant get the O ring on the inboard side of the caliper. from Porsche.. Its kinda special its made to withstand brake fluid.. oh well I just reused the old one it didnt look too Bad.. |

72SMFI,
Blow the pistons out with an air compressor, right past the dust boots and all. Then put a screwdriver under the dust boot lip and carefully pry it out. Easy. I'd recommend you go back and get those o-rings out; they should be the same on each side of the caliper if I remember correctly. The whole rebuild kit is available cheap from Tweeks; forget dealer parts. -d |

Did you get an Ate rebuild kit? Some others are not correct (Repco, for one) for the 'S' caliper! There is no separate retaining ring for the Ate seals ... they are vulcanized into one seal incorporating the ring.
If you mean the O-ring under the four-bolt cover, theat's true ... it isn't supposed to be removed during rebuild! And, it is not required for normal removal of pistons and seals. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Warren,
Good point about Ate. I just checked my massive stack of P-car bills and noticed my S rebuild kit was from Perf. Products, and it was Ate parts. 72SMFI- make sure to leave the caliper halves and the 4-bolt caliper alone..you should only have to service the piston bore seals/dustcaps and the bleed screws. ------------------ Dave 1972 911T (E motor) RSR replica project http://members.nbci.com/dtwinters/garage/ |

yes I have the ATE Kit 901 351 964 11 mybee there is two differant styles. Well I did some reserch on rennlist and there is a popcycle stick method and a gerbur baby jar lid method. On The 4 bolt cover I had to take it off. The calipers are 28 years old. I am just going to reuse them and if they leak I will go from there.. PS my dust covers clearly do not have a snap ring built into the dust seals I hope I dont have a wrong kit. The Piston seals seamed to fit perfect

Those are the wrong kits! I was sure that was the one for the 'M' caliper, based on the different piston/caliper seal, but the part number confirms (per the parts catalog) the fact! The correct number for 'S' calipers is 901.351.998.00!

Well, I just got done rebuilding the front calipers on my '83 SC. Rears are next. Rears are different size, smaller, so I trusted only Pelican. Same price as everyone (about $15). Didn't notice if it was ATE, but it has a separate metal ring for the dust boot. A little lube, and everything fit fine. The ring and dust boot were easy.
So was the sealing ring in the bore. I had paid no more than $2.99 for a set of four pointed dental type things. I carefully poked the seal and out it came. first I tried with various plastic knife things that did not work. Again, a little lube and they went right in. Now I'm having trouble with bleeding (see the exciting topic right here at PelicanParts). ------------------ '83 SC |
