Trouble locating a new fan pulley nut

Okay, what the heck is going on here? Has no one ever cross-threaded a fan pulley nut? I cannot find a supplier for this nut! Today I managed to bugger up the threads on the 16mm by 1.00 pitch jam nut that holds the fan pulley in place. I have visited a hardware store, a fastener store, an auto parts store, called a Porsche dealer and an aftermarket Volkswagen Beetle specialty place as well as looked on Pelican, but I cannot find this simple little nut! Do any of you have a source?

Visit you local starter/alternator repair shops. You might get lucky and get it for free. HTH.

I got a 16 x1.00 nut from AAA metric in Denver:

They DO NOT have jam nuts, but they have regular depth nuts. So, it will work, but won't be 100% "proper."

Where did you find it here on PP? Because I'd love to have the proper one, but everywhere I find it it shows up as $NLA. Unless 74-81 "Marchal alternator nut" will work.

Here's my story on that nut: Is there a way to repair the threads on the alternator shaft?

Long story short, the 16x1.00mm are NLA, while the later 17x1.5mm are readily available. I still have a spare alternator with repairable threads but I couldn't find a replacement nut for it.

Good luck and let everyone know if you find a suitable (grade 8) replacement.

Well that's interesting. I ordered part #928-603-904-00-M262 Marchal Alternator Nut. If you click "more info," it says "911SC / Turbo (1978-1983) (from 82)" Hmm...does this imply that the part is compatible with a 1978-81 car with an '82 or newer motor?

That nut is 17x1.5

Feel free to flame away, but when this happen to me I just rethreaded it to the closest SAE size which I believe was 15/16 (still have the die if you want to borrow it). Picked up the die at the local auto parts store. Worked just fine. Think it cost me around $10 for the die and 50 cents for the nut. If you want you can try and get a thread chaser and clean up the threads to see if you can get the metric nut to work.

I had two rebuilt alternators and each had a different sized nut. I took the alternator with a cross-threaded nut down to an alternator rebuilding place. The shop had a box full of old alternator nuts and they just gave one to me.

Kurt V and Hotrod, those are both great ideas. I thought of the possibility of re-threading to a more standard size last night. Kurt V, do you recall the thread pitch for the imperial thread size?

I will try to remember to go home at lunch and dig out the die from the tool box. I know it was a fine thread.

Good news for me! I just located a source close to me that has four 16m-1.00 nuts! Thanks to Hotrod who inspired me to call a good alternator shop.

I found M16 x 1.0 nuts at a local fastener outlet, after much searching. They had to be ordered in. Unfortunately the outside diameter is 24 mm not 22 mm so the alternator wrench does not fit. I am grinding down the flats to suit. They were not cheap, about $8 each. I bought a few, so if anyone needs one badly I can send one for about $10 incl mailing.
