Question Does Solex =E-cam

Does Solex = E-cam. I believe it does. I have never seen an article or info. section where it is used inter-changeably. I figure the E-cam is the best street cam for a street engine 2.7 w/Webers and SSI.

Well, guys ...

The specs are close, but not identical!

1965-66 Solex cams: In - 244 deg. 0.439" Ex - 234 deg. 0.406" Intake opens 52 degrees Before TDC, and Exhaust closes 44 degrees After TDC, yielding an overlap of 96 degrees.

'E' cams: In - 229 deg. 0.408" Ex - 223 deg. 0.393" Intake opens 29 degrees Before TDC, and Exhaust closes 19 degrees After TDC, yielding an overlap of 48 degrees.

What is 'best' is a very subjective evaluation ... Bruce Anderson likes the Solex cams in a carbed 2.7 application. For further discussion of cams, including 'S' and GE-60 grinds refer to this post:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/009740.html

It is an interesting phenomenon, and maybe you have never driven a later, 2.4 'E' or 'S', or RS 2.7, but as displacement is increased a 'wilder' cam grind becomes tame ... the 2.4E power peak is at 6200 rpm, but the RS 2.7 engine using 'S' cams has its' power peak at only 6300 rpm!

Of course, gearing is also a factor, but I favor the 'S' or GE-60 cams in any carbed or MFI engine over 2.4 liters!

warren, according to the factory spec handbooks, the specs are the same. (like for 901/01 and a 901/09 engines). they are timed differently is all. mystery.

If they are timed differently, but are the same cam , my assumption is that earlier timing equals greater low end torque. If this is true, does anyone know what is the torque difference? How is the torque curve affected?
Not to be boring, but a highly respected Porsche shop in Los Angeles, REDLINE, [for over 40 years]said to me once that many guys who had installed E-cams on street cars changed over to 4.2 cams for better street action. The 4.2 related to timing, but that was the vocabulary. In UP-FIXIN VOL V, p.21 the chart shows 1966 911 cam with int. .439 and ex. .406 and timing of 4.2 to 4.6mm. Where does all this fit in a 2.7 with SSI and 40 IDAs that does cross-country rides at 3300 to 4000 rpm. Torque is everything for agility. RS forged, flat top pistons were installed at rebuild to give me flexability in picking the ideal cam.
