Fluorescent dye kills A/C ?

An A/C specialist of tremendous reputation here suggests fluorescent dye used to detect A/C leakage would damage the non-metal components in an A/C system. AFAIK, cars with a leaking A/C usually saw fluorescent dye at the shop.

This specialist uses an electronic detector for leakage. Anybody has same experiences or any comments?

Well, the dye will take place of the refrigerant so it will effect the cooling process. As far as damage, that seem odd that they would add something that would harm the system?

Logic dictates once leak is found and corrected. One should bleed and vacumm the system and add proper oil and refrigerant ratios.

Guess he's referring to the seals.
He also mentioned that since new refrigerant is very expensive lots of garages use recycled refrigerant of unkown quality/purity, which results in many A/C problems.

electronic detector? I guess you mean the tool which people refering to as the sniffer. I heard using sniffer is more accurate than using dye method, beside dye is taking space in the system.

I've never heard any issue with dye but many AC pros tell you not to use other additives like "leak stoppers".
Maybe the tech was just making the point that his electronic sniffer is a better tool. Ken
