What is the largest speaker that you are able to mount in door without cutting sheetmetal? Also what the largest in rear deck (only 1-3/4" depth of rear deck).
Right now have 5-1/4" coaxials in doors and 4x6" in rear deck. Thinking about 6-1/2 or 8" in doors(must cut cardboard door panel) and 5-1/4" in deck. Changing from cheap asian stuff to maybe some german MB Quart's. Any other brands I should consider? What experiences have you had? Joseph, check out www.crutchfield.com. Good prices and can tell you what will fit in your vehicle.

Hey if you are going to put some new speakers in your car you need to put the Boston's pro series. They are the best speaker on the market. I have them in my car and they are the best speakers you will ever have. I have the directional tweeters under the dash and the 6 1/2 in the doors and the component speakers in the back. With an Alpine head unit the system sounds so clear and is not over done. If you have any questions let me know.

I believe Original Fit Interiors out of California makes a modified replacement rear deck that accepts 6"x9" speakers. As for the doors, you can probably sqeeze in 6.5's, but mounting depths of different brands & models vary greatly, so try to find a pair with shallow mounting depth. Whatever speakers you are considering should have the complete dimensions on the back of the box.

I mounted 6-1/2" Yamaha 602 subs in my '79 in place of those tiny ( what.. 4" ? ) toys they put in at the factory. Also had a foam shield to guard against water dropping down on them, vented into the door at the bottom.

My '86 only has one speaker in the door. Was it '87 when Porsche went with two(seperate tweeter and seperate woofer). What was the size of the woofer?
Kenneth, what else did you campare them too. There something about having german speakers that just feels right. Even if a little less refined(if thats possible). Joseph '86 T-look |

I have a set of 6 1/2" speakers in my doors. Now I don't know if the door was moded by the PO. As far as the rear speakers I can't help you as the PO took the rear channel of the aftermarket cd player and ran it to a second set of speakers in the doors. (grrrrr)

I have 6 1/2" MB Quarts in my doors with the tweeters in the factory spot. You will have to trim out the fiberboard but they fit otherwise. My only problem is that they sometimes vibrate the panel and I can't figure out a way to make it more solid mount.

Buck,
I used some good quality closed-cell foam strip to not only reduce any chance of buzzing, but also sealed the subs to the door panel grill. If you've done this and are still getting noise, check the panel itself and glue (or whatever you prefer) the panel back together; also check for anything behind the panel that's possibly rattling. Since I had only subs in the door and a big Nak amp under the passenger seat dedicated to the subs, I had some issues with mechanicals inside the door that needed help ( and I prefer tight/solid bass as opposed to the boom-chukka-boom crap you see in these "competition" cars ). ------------------ Charlie Baer '79 Euro 911SC |

Hello
The doorcutout will aloow 160 mm euro speakers. Many of them are to deep dished and need spachers. Some are mad to fit flush. One is an very excellent Panasonic two way unit that has the magnetcoil outside. Whatever you choose most aftermarked units are a large improvment but most will drag power and need a hughe amplifier. Some companys make high efficient units who will work with a normal 5 Watt sinus output. But they need solid work and use mostly neodym and therfore are very expensive. More then a 10 pound 1000 Watt amp monster. If you understand the Porsche philosophie you understand why I love those damn expensive speakers. In germany many tuners like Tech Art or Gembally offers special enclosures mostly runing with MB-Quart, JBL, Dynaudio units. Most of them where tuned to european costumer demands and mostly they are tuned for clear sound and good staging. Deep bass is not a thing they are focused on but they have a "solid dry bass". Charlie,
I tried this but don't think I got enough foam in there. I think if I really surround the speaker it will probably work. Thanks, Buck |

I spent most of the long winter researching this topic and most of the spring spring fighting with my car to replace the rear speakers. It really wasn't so hard, but I was able to make it a huge project. I have been able to determine that a 6.5 component system will fit in the doors, but that a 5.25 will fit a little easier. The standard size for rear speakers was 4x6 metric, but some time in the Carrera years went to 5x7. A regular 4x6 will just drop in, a 5x7 will go in without any cutting, but needs a little bit of work if you are replacing a 4x6 speaker. I recommend the 5x7. It has almsot as good of quality as the 6x9, but doesn't require nearly the extra effort. You can put a 6x9 in the back, but it takes some customisation. I highly recommend the Infinity Kappa series. They can be had for about $80 on netmarket, and less than $100 from Crutchfield. They are far superior to thee Kenwoods usually recommended for a 911. Good luck.
