Post speedo leaking

my speedo mechanism is leaking at the trany. the nut that screws into the trany is tight, but the speedo mechanism still wants to swivel, is this piece broke or wore out? i removed it from the trany and it looks ok, it seems like it should tighten up when screwed into the trany but it doesnt, any suggestions on this topic would be great. thanks in advance.

What car? What tranny?

I am just on the edge of fixing this on my '76 915 tranny with mechanical speedo drive.
Will keep you posted if its relevant...

This'll help if you have a 901 transmission. Drain the transmission. Disconnect the cable from the speedometer drive at the transmission. Remove the retaining screw above the drive and slide it out (you can drain your oil this way if you wish!).

Take the "O" ring seal to Home Depot and buy one for about 19 cents - I posted this information previously with the "O" ring size but can't find it and can't remember the size. In fact I used one which was very slightly thicker than the original.

The early(?) 915 is different, as it has no external speedo drive to be dismounted. The sealing is not an O-Ring but an oil seal ring ("Radialwellendichtring"). I have ordered one at the local P-shop and will pick it up these days.
