Hello,
I'm planning to install a MSD-6200 or a 6420 in my 911T 1972. - I follow the 101 Porsche Projects. (MSD project 24) -- Find some update an corrections for this book-- Project 24: This paragraph: “In a similar manner…pickup or points.” Should now read: “The white MSD wire is connected to the points if your car has them (1965-77). Cars with magnetic pickups use the magnetic pickup wire in the MSD unit.” Also, Add this sentence to the paragraph at the top of page 75 that ends with “potential tachometer problems.” Use tach adapter 8910 if your 911 uses points (1965-77) or adapter 8920 if your 911 has a magnetic pickup (1978-83). Since writing the book, MSD appears to have altered their product line slightly - resulting in a slightly different installation procedure. Please consult MSD before purchasing or installing their units. Specifically, I am told that the tach adapter may or may not be 100% required, as I was originally told by MSD. -I use a original tachometer from 1972 with a 1982 3.0 204hp engine and HKZ Bosch. -I'm not sure if / or which tachometer pickup is needed. -The 8910 or 8920 or non at all (read see above) Greetings Eduard Amsterdam/Netherlands |

I did a lot of research, and believe found in the MSD pdf that 1st you should just attach a wire between the TD port on the CD connector (pinout in Bentley, but is top middle connector) and the tach output on the MSD device. If this doesn't work, you need the tach adapter. And you are correct, if you are using the white wire, you need 8910. If purple wire, 8920.
I have an 82, and direct connection works just fine. It appears the older tachs may not do as well. If yours doesnt work, get the 8920. good luck |
