My Haynes manual says the speed sensor to ring clearance needs to be set to .8mm. They show an technique of gluing a washer on the sensor to set up the bracket and then removing the sensor to break off the washer without moving the bracket. I'm sure the Motronics needs both sensors, as the tach is usually fed by the timing of the spark not the speed of the ring gear teeth.

Messing with this for the first time in a long time. Still no scope... After flipping the speed and reference sensors around, both in the bracket and at the harness, and getting the same results (Spark, no fuel) I decided that both sensors appear to be good and opened up the DME which has been open before. Nothing that is obviously burned I'm afraid but with the top off I ran the starter and brushed 15 (fuel injector signal) with a ground: instant joy. The smell of burned fuel and sputtering. The only thing left to confirm is a good signal from my speed sensor at the box.
But I agree, DW; at this point I'm 90% sure it's the DME; I wonder if there are any Saint Louis guys that might be able to loan me a DME just to confirm that it will run on a different box before I buy one?
