Mono replacement speaker for '72???

Can anyone tell me the size of the original in-dash mono speaker for a '72?

Anyone know a good source to purchase a replacement one, preferably new?

Any tricks to installing one?

It doesn't appear that our host handles anything like this.

Thanks!

I think it's a 3x5.

It is a b*****d size. I know because I have an original Porsche NOS replacement speaker ( Bought in 1983). I just went and measured it. The speaker itself is 4 3/8 " x 9". The mounting holes are 3 1/8" x 8". I never found a US replacement that matched it. When I installed a modern radio/CD you need 4 speakers because of the resistance. The old Porsches like ours had a 3 speaker system(1 upfront-2 in back). I use an adapter plate and installed 2 4" diameter speakers in the front hole. Much better sound. The plate is a common one althgough I did have to make some small mods so that it fit in the hole. Go to a car stereo place and I am sure they'll have one. If you have the original radio you can try to fit a 4x9 speaker if you can find one. Good luck.

I've got an extra NOS speaker that I bought from a Blaupunkt repair shop. I hooked it up to make sure it works and it's sitting on a shelf now.

I'll take $135 including shipping if you're interested.

Thanks,

Mike

I would replace with a new speaker.

NOS is great for a concours car, but the speaker will not sound good b/c of the aging of the components while sitting on the shelf for decades.

I replaced my original with a unit put together by a california (IIRC) stereo shop.
After viewing it, I could have easly done it myself. It was a pair of smaller pioneer speakers wired togther...they were mounted on a mounting board cut to match the original speaker outline. Sounded pretty darned good...(edit) Once the dash speaker cover is snapped back in place, nobody knows...not even a concours judge. I've NEVER seen one remove the speaker cover.
