hey chris , heard you were getting your work done best of luck, one thing you might want to check for the valve covers is "expresso" rustolium its about the same color as our cars, check a search for butters they did the covers close to the body color and looked great , or maybe do a corodinating color ??

Nice Powder painting.

When I used SS bolts on the engine tin, the ones in the aluminum cam towers and such eventually loosened and walked out. I switched back to ferrous and no problems since. It was quite a pain to try to fish out the SS bolts that walked out in the engine bay since magnets won't help. Always feared that a loose SS bolt would go somewhere it shouldn't and mess up the engine.

when I wrote "engine tin" I was only referring to the black sheet metal, in don gibert's post, bolts that may become rusted

I agree that ss bolt placement doesn't function everywhere

I used all SS bolts/nylock SS nuts and where the bolts go into aluminum I used a drop of blue locktite, should be just fine. Even found SS wingnuts for the hats..

SS or ferrous, without lock washers, they come loose, especially on the tin ware because of the vibration.

I found that lock washers plus flat washers on the tin hold the 6 mm bolts pretty good. The length of the threads play a role; if too short, there is not enough grip.

Wherever possible, I use 15 mm instead of 10 mm thread length.

chris take a look
What color to paint engine parts?

i think this link will work its to an engine tin color poll , some body match some contrast

rice is a state of mind to stay out of but as far as matching things

i bet there are people on this board that match the engine tin to the car to their shirt color to their choice in headwear down to the underwear choice of the day for the drive

If you're painting your engine compartment body color keep that in mind also. As my car may end up Signal Green I didn't want my engine to look like it belonged in a carnival ride when I opened the hood..

Another fact to remember is that styles change. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, 356 guys were chroming everything in sight, but later that came to look very old-fashioned. And think about how Harry Pellow's 1980s all-gold-anodized stuff looks today. Original finish is always a smart place to start, with variations, especially on pieces that can be easily updated later if you no longer like it. Of course, if you want to re-finish everything every few years, go nuts...

How about going the 911R (unpainted) route on the fiberglass shroud?

The problem with stainless bolts...

When you have dissimilar metals you run into galvanic corrosion. (electrolysis)
The the greater the difference in the standard electrode potential of the dissimilar metals is where you run into problems.
The following page has a nice list of metals ordered by potential:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Will_stainless_steel_react_when_in_cotact_with_alu minum

Notice that galvanized steel fits nicely between magnesium and aluminum, and stainless is way down the list. The selection of bolt material wasn't accidental. The stainless bolts will look great but the aluminum anode of the threads will take the punishment.

If you keep everything ultra clean you will reduce the galvanic action. Locktite may help some by keeping the metals separated but I'm guessing as I haven't seen anything about it from a reputable source. It definitely can't hurt...

you crack me up. thanks for finding that thread. I looked but must not quered correctly.

I think the brown we have would be just too dark for engine area.

Black and medium-grey. The grey is darker than it looks in the pics. Satin silver ceramic HEs.
