Try this quick tip, Get a new socket, take a Glad 1 gallon starage bag, cut it into squares and place it over the lugnut, slide the socket over the bag piece and nut turn with you wrench. Presto a soft socket for pennys

"Soft-Socket" works great with new lug nuts.

it sucks with routine older nuts

Would it also work with a Hefty quart-size bag?

Yep any size will work, you just need a piece of plastic about 3 inches by 3 inches

I met the guy who used to make these. He said that he had to stop making them because no matter how many times he warned people that they only lasted a few times they still hasseled him constantly. They do work great for the concours crowd.

That's what I do. Not even a problem using a torque wrench. My lugs have been powdercoated and and it doesn't eve leave a mark that way.

Sorry if this offends our host, but Stoddard's sells an all aluminum socket that works well. Also, back in the day, Porsche sold a factory tool that was a steel socket lined in aluminum. I had both, but they're in Istanbul now.

socket

Have tried the plastic bag idea for several years.

It was suggested at a "Devil in the Details" session at Munks. It works but still after awhile the black on lug nuts wears through.

Even tried this with an aluminum socket with similar results. The socket wears off the black

I just bought the aluminum insert socket from our host Pelican. I have not had a chance to try it yet, but I can report on it's usefulness in awhile I guess.

But it is indeed available here at Pelican.

Good to know...IMO the plastic insert sockets are worthless.
