915 Hard to Shift and Find Gears (After Upgrades)

Hey peeps!

My 911 has been sitting for a little over a year without being driven. I just hooked up the shifter again with a Wevo PSJ, Rennshift, and a fluid change. It is hard to find gears/refuses to go in gear/is generally stiff. It hasn't been driven or started yet. Is this a symptom of sitting for so long? After idling the transmission and getting the Swepco swirling around will it loosen up and go back to normal?

The fluid I drained from the transmission was a yellowish/brown and smelled like burnt mint. Was the fluid burned? (The only good news is that I didn't find parts stuck to the plug or in the fluid).

Thanks,
Puff

How was the shifting prior to your upgrades?

My guess is the shift coupler still needs more adjustment.

Do I understand that you have not started the car yet?

If not, you have not circulated any gear lube through the tranny which could be the cause of the stiffness(no slidey action). It should loosen up once you get a few miles on it.

Many who have rebuilt these boxes claim that they can be a bit stiff at first.

I had a similar problem when I installed a Wevo shifter. My problem was the synchros were worn so it was hard to get into first gear.

I adjusted the Wevo to try to match the looseness of the factory shifter which helped but didn't cure the problem.

To make a long story short a short shifter doesn't work in a worn out 915 trans it just magnifies the problem.

I was mistaken in that I thought you had rebuilt your transmission.

Either way, once the Swepco gets circulated you should see a difference. You most likely will have to tinker with the coupler adjustment to get it spot on.
