Suitable Engine Stand Yoke??

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170376700473&viewitem=&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2&category=43998

Is this engine stand yoke advertised on e- bay for $90 suitable for my 2.4 L 911T engine without the need for any modification?

In the following photos you can see the bevel where it mounts to the engine. Also, there are cut outs for the cooler and engine tin.
How will the $90.00 one work I don't know.

Thanks. I don't know either. I wonder if anyone on here has used the e-bay model and has an opinion about it?

The e-bay ad says the this forum gave it a "thumbs up."

Does this Yoke suck?

This title to the note might get more attention.

4 spoke engine mount...

I used the 4 spoke mount, it worked fine. I had some concerns initially since it had one less spoke, but then again this was hopefully a one shot use.

I used good hardware of proper length and stayed away from using a lot of spacers under the bolt heads.

Wow. Nice looking rebuild!

The 5 yoke I have seen advertised has a "lip" that holds the case and the bolts are just used to support the lip. Some threads say that the "lip" is necessary to avoid distortion of the case.

Does the 4 spoke yoke you used have a "lip"?

Brad,

I loaned it to my mechanic after using it so I don't have it for reference. But if I remember correctly it only had a flat plate and relied on the attaching hardware for support. The case is quite structural with all of its webbing and I would think it would be hard to distort it. What is the difference with the Tranny connected with the same 4 connect points?

Granted the 5 spoke yoke is a far better piece of equipment. If I was going to be using it on a regular basis, I would invest in one. I didn't have any trouble, but it is scary hanging that much weight out there on some welds and 4 bolts. Maybe you can talk another local into splitting the cost of a 5 spoke yoke with ya if it would quell your concerns.

Porsche Crest Call the guy ...

This is the contact info for the guy who builds/sells these:

Kevin Kraum
14707 Wood Dr.
Magalia, CA 95954
United States
530-873-6005
kraum@sbcglobal.net

He has really tested them and is very comfortable with their durability. He also sells a 3 arm unit if memory serves that is more appropriate for VWs and 4 cyl. Porsche engines. The unit isn't as fancy as the heavy-duty $250 units out there but you wouldn't expect it to be. It should more than work for your usage however. I love mine.

Actually, the add says "pelicanparts.com 911 rebuild forum", you may want to ask over there and see if you get a hit. ((geeze, in the time it took to look at the ad again, 4 people responded...COOL!))

All good points and very helpful. Thanks.

I am going to drop the engine this weekend. And then, I may just order up one of the 4 arms.

Brad,

These people were very nice to deal with. I could look it up, but I think I paid slightly more for mine 2 years ago. So they might have come down a tad... What a deal!

BTW: I bought my stand from Harbor Freight.

Porsche Crest More input

Mine cost $89 ($105.16 with shipping) in June. I bought mine via an ad in TheSamba. Gotta think that it will be less without evilBay charges.

I borrowed one exactly like Jesset100s for a while but the owner needed it back so I had to buy my own. The big one is a beautiful piece of equipment and the various lips and reliefs are really nice. Interestingly, I actually had to grind out an extra relief in the big yoke for it to work on my SC engine. IIRC it was due to the crossover pipe for the exhaust unique to SCs but don't hold me to that. I hated to see it go.

When I mounted my new one, I don't recall seeing anywhere that I won't be able to mount stuff back on the engine. I suspect that the reliefs on the heavy-duty unit are to allow for how thick it is.

If I built engines for a living the big unit would be the way to go. I don't do it for a living and I like the $100 price more.

I am not trying to be cheap, but that sounds like the way to go. I don't plan on more than one rebuild.

I bought one of these a year or two ago when I had my engine out to replace a few seals etc... I bought it from eBay. The guys that make/sell these are very nice w/great communication, fast shipping etc... It seemed well built and certainly strong enough.

That said, it did not fit my engine quite like the factory yoke that I ended up borrowing from a friend and using instead. I think with just a minimal amount of work - grinding and spacing appropriately, it could fit and work just fine. I ended up selling mine. If I need one again, I will probably spring for the factory style yoke simply for the perfect fit out of the box (at least in my case). YMMV.

Whatever stand you buy, make sure it is not the "three point" style-two wheels at the back, one at the front. I watched in horror from the other side of my garage as a rebuilt 1923 engine on such a stand just pitched over on it's own! Needless to say, I welded a cross bar with casters across the end the same afternoon.

LOL: Excellent point, Wayne.

I just love that part, "your feet are NLA."

I spit my soda on my computer monitor and laughed so hard when I read that line.

I have had numerous requests, so I have started manufacturing Porsche 5 arm engine stands. They are available on ebay - $100 plus shipping. Kevin @vwalley1
