Another air conditioning thread
Here in Australia our summers are more than likely hotter than the US. Given the poor performance of our air conditioning (87 - 911) I have tried a number of upgrades over the years.
I have a turbo look 911 complete with the so-called whale tail. It struck me the other day that I could easily increase the surface area of the rear condensor from the existing 28*9 inches to 28*14 inches, an increase of 55 % in surface area. Surely this would be far easier and more simpler than many of the other options considered like in fender, underbelly and thicker front condensors. The condensor I propose would have to be mounted up in the whale tail, but it would seem on the surface to be the easiest way to increase condensor area. The only down side is more heat into the engine compartrment, but hey with a turbo that is what the intercooler does anyhow. Has anyone tried this? Is there any downsides? Any comments? |

It's been done and there is a thread somewhere here with lots of pictures.
The person that did it made their own condensor mounts for a full bay AC condensor up in the tail, and had the hoses made up at a local hose shop. He liked the results and had very cold AC. Whale Tail Condenser Mount...
I would suggest looking at the following link:
Let the AC fun begin....oh to blow 45!!! Thad Suter has done exactly what you want to do... I would do a search on him or send him a PM. I believe I might have some pixs of his installation if you want to PM me with your e-mail address.

Condensor in whale tail
Hello Ian
I live in Brisbane and when I felt the abysmal AC in my 911 SC I thought I would do the same thing. After a great deal of searching I found a company in Brisbane that would do this job and in November 2008 we had the condenser put inside the whale tail. At the same time we changed the compressor from the York to a Sanden with a custom mount. After this the AC has certainly worked a little better. We have purchased a centre air vent from our host and I am looking forward to fitting this to see if it improves the air flow a little more. There is a company down the Gold Coast called Euro Tune who do this conversion regularly and they use fans on the condenser. I have heard that their conversion works slightly better than the conversion I had done. I will be getting them to install these fans in our car when I can find the time to drive down and drop the car off. If you live in Brisbane you are quite welcome to come and look at the job that has been done. I will try and get some photos and post them for review. Regards Stephen

Ian,
I think it's generally considered that the condenser fans will help the A/C if you're in traffic, but don't add a lot if you're at highway speeds. The engine fan draws more than enough air across the condenser when you're not at stop and go to do its job.
