Fork Cover Plate leak
While under my 86 Carrera yesterday I was looking around in preparation for changing my tranny fluid I noticed an ooze of oil coming from around the fork cover plate on the bottom of the transmission. The parts blow up in Bentley's shows a gasket behind this plate. I thought it would be a good time to replace the gasket while the oil was out. Is this as straight forward as it seems. Loosen the four nuts drop the plate, instll new gasket and reinstall?

Pretty much it as long as nothing else drops out when you remove the plate just make sure the mating surfaces are clean and dry.

I would use an anaerobic sealant there as well.

It's just a paper gasket, mine leaked when I replaced it (was checking on tightness of fasteners holding down the fork, they were slightly loose). I did it a second time with a little gasket sealer - should have done that in the first place.

Easy fix... Use Curil-T sealant on both side of the gasket and you can't go wrong.
http://www.***********/acatalog/Curil_T_Sealing_Compound.html As mentioned earlier it's a good idea to check your shift fork. BTW: That's how I discovered my diff bolts had failed... Half a bolt fell out when I removed my shift fork cover! Pic of my old cover for interest...
