Moving to Boston - where does my 911 go?
Taking a new job up in Beantown, but I have to figure out where I should/can keep my Carrera. I will using a Mini as a DD that I will probably park on the street in the north end. There is a garage across the street that has uncovered parking for $200/mon. There may also be storage garages 10-15 min outside of the city that I could rent for an equal amount. Ideally I would like somewhere I can work on the car - but its not going to be where I live.
So does anyone else live in the city? If so, where would you keep a car like mine? I would like to have access to it so that I could drive it on the weekends, and take to DEs. Thats why being 10-30 min away isn't a problem. Or if its too much trouble I may just keep it down here in Virginia Beach...

I would NOT park it outside. If you do, your 22 year-old car will be lucky to see it to 25 years. The winter salt and overall year-round humidity will destroy the car in short order. Consider your Mini disposable.
I recall a storage garage down in Quincy that I used to pass by while living there, so I do know those types of places exist. I can't comment on the cost. I'd imagine it would be around the amount you noted---couple hundred bucks per month. Boston may be a very charasmastic town, but New England in general is an automotive wasteland. People just don't care about cars, and the brutal weather isn't any help. The year I lived in Boston and had a Porsche, I kept the car in California. Lime Rock is the only saving grace. The Lars Anderson automotive museum in Brookline also has a summer series of weekend lawn events, with a Saturday devoted to Porsche.

Cannot park outside.
I had a neighbor in NJ that parked his 328 and his 911turbo outside and I saw them rot over 3 years. Terrible

Funny you should mention this - I'm taking a job back that way too and will be starting mid-November. I might (possibly) be able to accommodate your car where I'll be staying, but I'll be staying quite a ways outside the city (about 40 miles).
My advice would be to get a storage unit and keep it there, at least during the winter months and DO NOT DRIVE IT from about November through April. At least 3-4 good heavy rainfalls after the last snow/salting of the road or you WILL be sorry. I grew up back that way and know all too well what that climate and the road treatments will do to cars. Don't do it. Find someplace indoors, even if it's an extra couple bills a months and store it there.

You definitley picked the worst place to live owning one car let alone two!!
I'd check Craigslist or with the local PCA Club (even BMW club since you own a Mini) for local storage maybe right outside the N End in Medford, Somerville etc. Maybe the P -Car wrenches may have a service as well: EPE, Autobahn etc. Good luck!

Well, after I move out of my house after selling my '84 Cab, maybe you can rent the single-car garage from my wife.
![]() FWIW, consider a self-storage bay. At the shop I used to rent space from, they were storing cars inside, unheated, not exactly secure for $100 a month. They were also renting storage boxes (the roll-off kind) that fit 2 cars per box for $100 / spot. That was a little more secure, still unheated, etc. Good luck!

I thought about storage places, but I think they require it to be dead storage (i.e. no working on a car). Bummer. Not sure how much heat has to do with it but I guess some people think its really bad for the car. My realtor mentioned that there were some garages in Somerville - I will look into that. I do agree about the salt though - there is a huge pile of it right across the bay in Chelsea for use in the city - yuck!
We'll see - I may just try to convince my cousin in Westchester county to let me use his garage - he's got 4 spots! ![]()

Tony, you are welcome to leave your car at my offices in Watertown, I've got several spaces open. Very safe but it would be outside, so only temporary until winter comes. Somerville isn't a place I would leave any 911, or a 912, or even a 914.

Try the parking garage at the Atrium Mall in Chestnut Hill. The garage is operated by Ameripark, as I recall. It's reasonably priced, safe, dry and you can come and go at most any time. Don't let your car sit all winter. Take it out for a spin when the roads are dry. I've been doing it this way for 30+ years, without a problem.
