That car is just gorgeous!!!!
|
I really dig the old school look of the white raised letter tires... they must have been tough to find. I'm going to go way off the beaten path and polish my 6 & 7" cookies with 205/55's & 225/50's. I figure, why get 7's and 8's only to put the same width tires on them. My chosen size will give the car a bit more torque to boot... I just hope they don't look too small. :)
|
Actually I just cleaned up the sidewalls then took my trusty modelmaking paintbrush and delicately painted the lettering with KILZ interior/exterior primer. I just like the look of painted sidewall lettering. Must be the shameless cafe racer in me I guess.

Just beautiful!
Great job and inspiration for mine... |
Silly question... is the striker plate upside down? As in this one goes on the other side? My 911 did not have them, though I have since purchased a set, I am now not sure which way they go on.

I didn't have doors...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1261457014.jpg I was missing a couple parts when i bought my car off the "lot" :) |
Oh I see. Yes striker plates are the least of your worries. Looks like a fun project.

This is roughly where I am hoping to end up...

car looks amazing, but please SLAM it

Good sound is a relative thing. In a 911 with little to no soundproofing, lightweight carpet, no cat and a 2-in 2-out muffler there is no point in aiming for audiophile quality sound. I will be happy if it produces pleasant noise. :) The interior door panels are not installed yet so I cannot tell you whether this will work or not but here is my plan. I bought new door cards from AppBiz. The cards have been cut away around the mass/mid and tweeter as the drivers have been secured to the metal interior panel of each door. I bought some auto upholstery cloth that will cover the door cards. The material is not very thick and I expect it will not have any significant impact on the sound. From my experience with various speakers and grill types perhaps the tweeters will be a little dulled but this should be easily cured with tweaking the treble on the head unit. The thickness of the door cards are just about equal to the edge thickness of the bass/mid driver so the drivers should not be visible behind the cloth. I should be able to tell you more about the sound quality next week as the car is very close to being back on the road.

Of course, it has lost just a wee bit of weight since then...

True but I don't think it will look so much like a rally car once it has been moved. I intend to drive it around a bit, install a lightweight battery then take it to Rennsport for corner balancing and ride height adjustment.

Wow. Just wow.
What a beautiful car!! |
Thanks for all of the kind words. The interior made some progress this week. I was hoping it would all be done before Christmas but that wasn't to be. I chose the domestic carpet with a shorter pile than the original sliver knit and it is very light. I was tempted to go for the perlon carpet but I like the blacker black of this type. It is a semi-RS style with no rear seats but I will still have the rear parcel shelf and rear quarter panels.

Interior pics
The interior is mostly done at this point. I did not want rear seats but at the same time I wanted something more visually interesting than the RS carpet set. What I ended up with is a blend of a '74 interior but with carpet covering the rear seat area. After having a spare parcel shelf recovered we found that I must have purchased one from a Targa as after installing it was an inch short on either side which exposed the foil of the soundproofing pad underneath. Fortunately Rick from American Auto Trim in Tulsa came to the rescue and fabricated a new parcel shelf and the end result I think is even nicer than what we started with. Houndstooth material was sourced from Stefan at GTS Classics in Austin. Not quite the OEM pattern but closer than any other material that I looked at and it blends nicely with the black vinyl on the pillars and the cream headliner.

I kept the SC door handles and lids but replaced the pockets with a set of fiberglass reproductions off eBay. Warning - the fit on these was very awful and required much massaging after warming with a heat gun to make them work. Since this is primarily a street car I wanted to keep the door pockets as I find them very hand to stick things in that are easy to get at while driving. Door openers are also from eBay that I just thought looked pretty neat as it will match the single "911" badge that will be on the rear decklid.

Cool choice!
|
Very cool. I have been trying to convince myself for about 2 years now to do this with Pasha fabric on my 83. How bad/good was the carpet install?
|
Sitting in the car surrounded by pasha could be a mind altering experience :) I think it would look very cool. I have never priced pasha but if it is anything like the OEM houndstooth it would not be cheap to do as you will need 3 yards of fabric to do the doors, quarter panels and rear parcel shelf. I wimped out and had the carpet professionally installed. I concluded that having it done right was worth it compared to me messing it up and having to see that every time I got in the car.
|
If you don't mind sharing, would you tell me what the cost was on the labor for the install? You can PM if you'd prefer. I just want something to compare to. My local shop tends to be pretty expensive on this type of stuff for some reason. They wanted almost $500 more to do my convertible top than the guy out there in Tulsa charges (Tom someone I think and American something - can't think of the name).
On the Pasha, yeah a bit $$$$. I was just going to do the door panels, plus the rear panels, and the front and rear seat inserts if that makes sense (like the factory). My car is a cabriolet, so I do not have to worry about the rear deck, or even the side panels in the rear for that manner. But I would like to do something different back there than the carpet, so I was planning on using leather to recover the panels and the back "deck" area. Thanks for making me think about this again!:p |
Better not drive that car while under the influence of any psychedelic substances. :)
|
Not to hijack, but Shane...do you have a source for Pascha? Buddy needs just enough to do one seat panel. And if you need authentic brown german vinyl of that era, he has a large quantity...ordered 3 yards and was inadvertently sent 30 yards:eek:

You know, I've been hearing that this car is back on the streets again. The funny thing is, there are no pictures....

Kiwiokie,
Just curious how your car is coming along. Your car is one of a couple that I'm using for inspiration. From the last few posts it looked like you were getting close to finishing up. I can't wait to see how the bumper recession looks. |
Very nicely done....
Fantastic color and interior trim combo. The color reminds me of a new '70 "grabber blue" Boss 302 Mustang I begged a salesman to "save" for me (I was 7 years old at the time), while my dad looked at a Bronco on the new car lot. I also begged my dad to buy a Pantera as well 4 years later, but he ended up with a 460 Lincoln for $6k (oil crisis giveaway price).
I may have to "be on the look out" for one of those run down SC's that pop up every once in a while for around 5k and build a similar version. Keep us updated! |
OK finally got some time to take some pics. Sorry about the grainy images. The late afternoon sun was playing havoc with the digi camera I was using. Pretty much all done at this point - just relocated horns to driver side wheel well and installed a horn button on the prototipo. I have a strut brace to install, Seine shifter kit and Odyssey battery to go in also but this does not stop me enjoying the car as is. I took the car for its first open road drive the other weekend and it was magic. Arrow blue is just the best color in weak winter light. It looks almost backlit :-)

Added a CDR220 but found the CD drawer catches on the dash knobs. What a PITA.

Frickin GORGEOUS!!!! I'm inspired!
|
Thanks man. It is a pity the pictures aren't better. In real life the paintwork is just beautiful. This was not a blank-check build but I have ended up with exactly the 911 I wanted, from the exterior color selected by poring over 30 years of production color charts, to the houndstooth interior and down to the finest of details. Sort of a retro cafe racer without the expense and potential complications of a backdate. It has been a really fun project and I hope others are encouraged to do the same.

It does look extremely nice. My only complaint is that the rear bumper is tucked in a little too much. Besides that, it's awesome.

Nonetheless, an inspiring build! I absolutely love to be able to see the oil lines running to the front cooler. |

Yeah I like the exposed oil lines too. I first saw these on the blue long hood hot rod (Chris Nielson's I believe) that is on another thread and thought they looked awesome. The stock lines clean up pretty easy with some steel wool and a little paint thinner. |
Earlier in the thread someone asked about how the stereo sounded with speakers mounted behind the door cards. The sound is just fine. he CDR220 gives quite respectable sound even without an external amp. I tweaked the treble just a touch but other than that you could not tell the speakers were behind cloth. Of course if you are using vinyl or leather on the door cards you would need to perforate them like the factory did.
