TDC "Z1" mark???

I adjusted valves this past weekend. Found TDC and the Dissy mark match up. Did the 120 degree rotation and sequence of 1,6,2,4,3,5.

However, isn't TDC supposed to be marked with a Z1 stamped? Where exactly is it stamped?

TDC should be marked Z1 and it will be on the rear (closest to the bumper) of the crank pulley.

My '88 Carrera has a Z1 mark (same location as Keith says), but not my '77... maybe some cars just don't have the mark.

But even if it's not marked, you can always tell which of the 120-deg marks is TDC/BDC Z1 because there is a timing advance mark next to Z1 and not next to the others.
Having just completed the adjustment, I suspect you knew this already, though.

Maybe the experts can clarify here, but I thought that ALL factory pulleys were marked. Could it be that aftermarket pulleys don't have Timing and TDC nomenclature on them?

My pulley is factory and I sure can't find any Z1 stamp on it.

My factory pulley with provision for A/C (two pulleys) just has the marks and no Z1 lettering. When I replaced the double pulley with a single one, the new single pulley does have the Z1 mark on it. Go figure.

Mine also has no Z1 stamp. After finding it with the dizzy I painted the correct notch with a dab of left-over guards red. You can see it now!

Great Idea RarelyL8. I always "borrow" some of the wifes nail polish to mark. Definitely a good idea for those who dont have a marked pulley. just in case you have to pull the dizzy and forget to mark it. Those are the kinds of tips the new guys should be reading.

Dang, you guy are determined to have me open the hood again......(thanks)

'Honey, can I use some of your nail polish, there's something I must do to the car......"

She doesn't believe me when there is a legitimate reason. This is going to confirm ALL of her suspicions......

Mine has two marks unlabeled so which is which? Is the 5 degree timing mark on the left or right side of Z1 ? I thought the timing mark would be on the right side of Z1 (I have a 1969 911E motor) so it would be BTDC but I have seen pictures where it is on the left of Z1 (ATDC)

Some car is BTDC... some were ATDC so just check the service manual and go from that, or the pretty gold foil labels.

Don't use nail polish, too girly. Just slap a strip of duct tape on it

Mine looks like this but no mark, letter, nor numering. I think the first one of the left is (where it marks Z1 on this pic) is TDC. Am I correct?

15 deg after TDC
5 deg after TDC
Z1 is TDC (as close as one is going to get without using a dial indicater on the piston.
35 deg before TDC.
