Ist question of many - Heat

Hi guys, I am a new addition tot he forum. I just inherited a "87 911 cabriolet in about 40 boxes. The prior ower is a family member who bought it to "fix up" several years ago and amanged to disassemble it and then lose interest. Our deal id I have 12 months to get it together and I can have it - FREE. So I will probably be asking a number of stupid questions in the next few months. Please bear with me.

I have read many posts and promise to try the "Search" feature before posting. I also have a couple of manuals (non factory) and a copy of PET. Maybe these will keep me from bugging everyone to much.

1st question: I have been laying out parts to "dry fit" them so I know what I have and what I'm missing. On the lower portion of the driver's side back seat - the vertical portion - there is a round hole that extends into the engine compartment. Is this something to do with the heater or ??? It looks like I have all the heater blower and hoses but this opening has me questioning if it is a recirculation vent or something similar. If it is, I appear to be short a hose / fitting/ ???

Any help will be appreciated. I will post photo of the "poor thing" as soon as I get it out of the garage so I can get a picture taken. Cold and rainy here in KY right now so the garage stays shut.

That is where the wire harness for the ECU runs.

Buy the Bentley manual for this car as soon as possible and 101 projects. Don't tear apart anything you don't have to and you should be OK.

Wow, I'm jealous! I always loved putting together model kits and a 911 in pieces sounds like a great way to while away the hours (and months).

Before you start wrenching things together, familiarize yourself with the 911, the likely repairs it will need and provide as much running narration and photos to this BBS as possible. You have struck the literal goldmine that will help you get from A to Z - there are more guys here who know more stuff about 911s than anywhere else in the known universe. Fantastic project!

Regards,

Also get the Porsche Parts CD [PET] there are exploded drawings and part numbers that are very helpful.

I just spent the last seven years taking my SC apart to the tub and back together again. If you only have 40 boxes you are half way there! If you send me a picture of something I can probably tell you where it goes on the car. It really is the ultimate jigsaw puzzle, only a heck of a lot more expensive. Assuming you will want/have to replace certain pieces this will be anything but a free project. Crack habits are cheaper, but there is nothing like intimate knowledge of your car.

I dont know your whole story but my piece of advice is to get the title signed over to you before you put any big bucks into it. you never know if they will suddenly want their car back when its done have fun

I got the car together and running within the guideline -barely. The deadline was to keep me from following my cousin's example and having a non-operating vehicle around for years (10+). I spent a little $ but mostly just personal time.

The car is now together and running so now the fun starts. I have located a number of things I want to add and/or improve and will start soon.

Hope list:
New upholstery
New carpet
Upgraded sound system
Fresh tires (with legal tread)
Better exhaust
H-4's
New Paint (ouch!!)
Quaife differential (bought for low $ at auction of auto shop)
Better ride height setting (low but not slow)
And other pricey items as they come to mind.

I have to compliment this forum. I was able to find everything I need between the Bentley manual, our host's book, the forum and the PET CD. This is a great source of info; if you are patient and diligent, you can find almost anything.

Thanks to everyone for their help - your posts have been a treasure trove of info for a novice.
