Pop-out side windows on later cars?

I frequently see pop out rear windows on early cars, but I don't think that I've ever seen them on a later car with black window frames.

Did Porsche stop offering them or did they just fall out of favor when air conditioning became standard?

Not sure what year Porsche stopped w/ the pop outs. I'm guessing 74-76. You can install them on later cars. It's been done, but metal cutting is involved. I have a set and was thinking about doing this one day. You also need the interior and exterior trim as it is different for pop outs.

I suspect it had more to do with cost cutting than air conditioning.

It is an anti theft feature. Most car makers stopped making vent windows at this time.

Pop ot windows

I have a set of pop open windows I thought about installing but did not know what needs to be done. I guess additional trim is needed that I don't have. I was working as a locksmith years ago needed to open an 911 and had no luck with the "slim jim" luckly the owner had the rear window open. I removed the three allen bolts on the latch side and used a hook to pick the keys off of his seat. A little slow but worked.

Any links to the retro fit? If I remove my ac system I would like to install door wing windows and the rear pop outs. That would be fitting in my 79 SC with no sunroof and crank windows.

911SC's and newer have an additional steel rail/flange on the B-pillar. If you don't mind cutting away that bit of reinforcement you should be able to back-date to the pop-out windows. --they are cool, IMO, but not cool enough for me to start cutting away structural reinforcements.

There are some good posts with pict's around here somewhere.

I would not want popout windows in my car. Just one more thing to start rattling.

Are there front wing vent windows for non-Targa cars? I'd love a set.

Yes...all short wheelbase 911 coupes '65-68 had front wing vent windows. After that, only Targas had them until '77 when they too went to solid windows. I've heard these will bolt in all the way up to '89.

They are on my 1973.5T and are fantastic for flow-thru ventilation. The rubber seal is so thick I doubt they would ever wear to a point that the window would rattle. The rear rubber seals are easy to replace and seal out weather quite well.

The only negative(s)?
1) You must pullover and GET OUT if you want to close them in event of rain or running the AC.
Leaning back while inside with the seat back lowered will result in a broken neck!
2) The windows will pick up dirt, bugs, etc., because they are extended out. Not very
effective for air braking though!
3) Sooner or later the small pin holding that nice chromed latch together will come out!

Can someone who has thoroughly researched this please post all the links? This is an important back-date that needs to be well documented.

There are two distinct projects: rear quarter windows and front vent windows. The front vent windows can be farther separated for coupe and Targa.

There are also chrome plated brass and anodized aluminum (silver and black) versions. In early versions there were tints and clear.

I think some require the entire early window frame and negate electric windows.

Best,
Grady

I put some in my 80Sc as seen in my sig. I had to buy some threadcerts for the rear. Teh only Metal I had to cut was a flange where the window hinges goes into the car. I did nto cut it actually just drilled the spot welds.
No rattling but like the other poster said you won't be reaching back to close them.

73 was last year as standard equipment

The original owner of my 74 911 paid $75 for the optional openning rear windows. Put this in perspective as the following upgrades cost as follows:

* 5 Speed Transmission $250
* Openning Side Rear Windows $75
* Forge Allow Wheels 6x15 $605
* Stabilizer Bar-Rear $75
* 911S INstruments $80
* Retractable Antenna $75
* Leather Covered Sport Steering Wheel $90
* Tinted Glass - All Round $190
* Electric Sliding Roof $615

Base 911 with the following optional upgrades sold for $12,005.00

The pillars that allow the pop hinges are still available from Porsche proper; I know because they sent me a pair by mistake when I ordered lock pillars. As for fit, I have my '68 quarter windows sitting flush in a set of 993 quarter panels in the garage right now. Other than the pillar replacements, you'd need the three threaded holes for the rear retainer. I have the strange feeling we've gone over all of this in another thread . . . with pictures, even . . .
