3.6 conversion question

I am doing a 3.6 conversion into my 74 911, I have a fender mounted oil cooler, I want to add a 2nd oil cooler and was wondering what my options were.

Can I plug in an external oil cooler and bolt to the boot lid? or something like?

You can mount one behind the front bumper in the center if you use a IROC or RS front bumper or you can mount a oil cooler in the drivers side fender.... pretty much the same location as the passenger side cooler. It depends on what your doing and what body you have.

Just using a stock G series front bumper, so a front oil cooler is not on the cards , I figure I could mount one off the engine to the rear deck lid and just keep the front mounted as is, anyone done one like this?

I just did the 3.6 conversion on my 78 SC and was having major cooling issues.The solution a nose mounted cooler and a fan on my fender well cooler for use in slow city driving.PROBLEM SOLVED.Best of luck to you John.P.S. you will be very pleased with 3.6 set-up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how do you get the air flow with a front mounted oil cooler on an sc?

I am still using my impact bumper but replaced the front valance(lower) with a glass unit from Better Bodies.It has a cut out for a cooler (IROC) style.It looks trick and works great.John

Matt,
Many mount a second carrera cooler in the driver's fender. This is a pretty ideal solution. One new oil line is created to attach to the current cooler and a second attaches to hard oil line back to the thermostat. Both cross over within the front bumper to the second cooler. Fabrication is relatively minimal.

Adding one in back has numerous drawbacks:
1. more weight in back
2. pre-heated air entering the engine (if you attach to the rear deck lid)
3. hard to make a clean install in the back as there just isn't a good spot.

I think that in normal driving only a normal Carrera cooler with ducts and fan is enough. Im running it now without fan. In the city/trafficjams the temperature rises to the second line, but not abow that. Cleaning the cooler helped a lot also.
Running on track is a diffent issue. ( hopefully i can test it next weekend).

A friend of mine actually mounted the oil cooler on the engine.....like all 3.2 and earlier engines do.
3.6's have a filter console in place of where the oil cooler would have been on all the prior engines.
I believe this is true.
If so, that would be the most elegant solution.
Put a stock oil cooler where it would normally go on the engine.

I think you want the extra filtration for the hydraulic valves with the 993 motors.

Don't know what 3.6 motor you have, but if it's a 993 it does have the oil filter on the case where the oil cooler used to be. If you have a 964 motor there is no cooler or oil filter. Here is a thread on how I added a "case" oil cooler on my 964 3.6 transplant. Did this back in '92, when very few 3.6 transplants had been done, and I didn't know any better! (LOL) Very little or better yet, no info back then on doing a 3.6 transplant, unlike today with the "kits" on the market it's a piece of cake. Have been very happy, and the car runs very cool!

3.6 transplant oil cooler question
