Project 2708 - Indy

Picked up a cool tape on eBay the other day. It was distributed by Porsche in 1987 and tells the story of their Indy car project. A little over 30 minutes long. If you can find one, it's well worth the money (I paid $13 for mine!). -- Curt

I have had this for years.
Still wrapped in plastic.
I have never watched it.
I wonder if it. Is it available on DVD?

I have that and watched it. It is worth $13 but not a whole lot more.

Hard to believe the years ticked by. Not a fan of the Indy scene but was pleased to with Porsche as VIP guest. Major learning curve for that factory effort. I don't recall the details but Teo Fabi was running strong early on and then something went wrong with only 17 laps in or so. Porsche probably would have served better to not develop a chassis but use the March tub instead.

As a footnote to the PR that Porsche wanted, a roller chassis was displayed at the Chicago Auto Show. They left the car not roped off and the manic kids were climbing on it! I walked up and chased a few off of it AND detached the quick release steering wheel that had been left on it! The Porsche PR group were so naive of what Chicago auto-show goers are.

As I recall, that first year at Indianapolis, Teo Fabi and the Porsche retired with ...a coolant leak ! I believe it was a water pump failure. Indy experts..check me on that one please. I read at the time that when Porsche came to Indy with their own chassis, the experienced Indy car teams were shocked by how heavy and behind the times the Porsche chassis was. Porsche just never seems to have much success with open wheel type racing for some reason. Except the 1962 French GP I guess.

I was fortunate to witness Fabi's win at Mid-Ohio, which I believe was Porsche's only Indy Car win.

I remember that one. I believe Teo and Porsche finished 4th overall in the point standings that year. Not bad. That was with the March chassis. I have often wondered how well they could have done if they had stuck with it.

There was the "Foster's Blue" version on display at the '06 USGP. The space was very tight, best pics I could get.

I ordered the video on Amazon yesterday - can't wait to see it!

I had forgotten it was a March chassis @ Mid-Ohio, but I do remember that. As I recall, they struggled & could not get up to speed, so they installed the Porsche engine in a March.
