Window Doesn't Properly Seal

The front quarter window does not properly seal against my targa top in this location:



I can see daylight from inside the car at this location. It's probably close to 1mm gap.

My targa top is new (rebuilt) from Dan Petchel. So I know the targa seals are good.

Any idea what the problem could be.

mine does the same thing and my top is in excellent condition. let me know if you find a solution.

How is your front window seal? I am sure Dan will ask as well.

If your front seal is good then you can adjust the front quater window, tilting it forward or back, in or out and/or up and down.

Take care if you tilt it in too much you can break the bottom support bracket. PAG has a very poor design, too thin and shallow so even if you buy a new one it will break under pressure. Ask me how I know.

I had this same issue, luckily I live very close to Dan and he fixed it for me. I think he adjusted the top so that it was splayed out a little more. Dan's very easy to work with, you won't have any problem.

same problem here. Adjusting the window height and parallelism helped a lot, but still a visible gap.

Timing on this is great I have just been looking at the gap yerterday and wondering what can be done. I did not know about the targa top manuas. Can you please emal them to me as well.... mark@rymac.com.au

My front seal is new. I just had some body work done and they replaced the seal because the old one was split.

How do you adjust the quarter window. I have one of those targa manuals. I'd like to see the other one.

I think there are 3 adjustments you can make:
1) move the side seal out and back (slightly) by loosening the mounting screws, push/slide it, tighten
2) adjust the targa top latch mechanism upward, which lowers the top a little (tighter against front seal, however). Have to disassemble the top a bit to reach the latch mounting bolts
3) adjust the window frame itself - have to take off the door panel and loosen the frame mounting bolts, there is a little adjustment there.

Each of these only moves the top a little, like a few mm or so.

Also, is your window raising too high? I've see that where the windows are adjusted wrong and raise too high, which lifts the side seal creating that gap.

I have had all kinds of problems with mine, it's now all sorted except for my drivers window, new door internals on the way. I would love a copy of that targa manual for future issues and tweaking! Could you please email me paulb@galonomics.com

I emailed Dan Petchel. He thinks its the wrong seal. Even though it's the right part number it's thicker than the original seal and causes problems where it pushes the targa top up. He sells the right one for $ 180. So maybe I'll think about replacing it.

My thinking is exactly what Dan suspects. Porsche replaced the original seal with a thicker version that is used on the newer targa's. The thicker corners of the new style seal push the top up and prevent a proper seal at the top of the vent window. The recommended fix was to shave some material from the bottom of the seal. Dan has had the original part re-manufactured. Not sure if Pelican sells it but I bought mine from Dan.

Well, almost 2 years later, I think I finally got this straightened out. After tinkering around with the quarter window height, main window height and angle, the thing that finally sealed up the gap was adjusting the targa side seal.

I loosened the screws that attach the side seal to the roof and pulled it out (towards the window) as far is it would go. The window seemed to seal against the targa seal perfectly after that. Then I had to adjust the window height, because it was rolling up too high and would not let the door close correctly. Once that was set, everything seemed fine. And the gap at the top of the quarter window and targa seal was gone.

The real test will be once a I drive it. I'm curious if any of the wind noise will be reduced. I'll also have to see how it does in the rain. (Hopefully no more drips at that location.)

If you have this problem, definitely try the targa side seal adjustment.

Remove all hardware and door panel, there are four bolts as I recall, loosen them and raise quarter window to where you want it.

Manual states the adjustment hole may need to be widen it raising does not meet your needs. But that means the front seal may be sitting too high. So be absolutely certain it is a front seal from Dan.

You will also need to re-adjust the window height limiter and parallelism. Look under the side seals you do not want to go higher than the wells. I found it easier to adjust the window while door is closed, sitting inside the car.

Also check the bottom bracket, they tend to break if the inward angle is too deep. Ask me how I know?

New Targa owner (1985 Meteor Grey)...

Would love to have these manuals you guys are talking about...if someone could email me with them that would be great. I've got a little bit of tinkering to do with the top! Here in Portland we tend to get a sprinkle or two and I noticed I need to:

1. Raise the driver's window about 2mm or so to go into the seal channel, the vent window about the same...everything else looks good.

2. Adjust the passenger side window at the rear to sit flush against targa bar seal....seals ok and in the channel at the front of the window , but then angles away at the rear.

I have searched and downloaded some instructions on removing the door panels, etc., but would love some more info on correct screws to look for, pics, etc.
