Climate controls lighting - how many bulb holders ?

Having my car for some 5 years, I only now noticed that the climate levers were supposed to be lighted along with the gauges. And they weren't...

Poking behind I found a lone bulb dangling from its wires.... I guess I'll need some bulb holders.

However, looking around I found different ideas on the number of bulbs needed, from 1 (Porsche PET) to 2-3 (Workshop Manual)...

Anyone can chime in ? Remember it's for a MY 74.

I seem to recall that it is two, one one each side.

Second worst job on a Porsche. Right behind removing the fenders.

Hire a small contortionist.

Funny, the porsche workshop manual refers to it as something like "easily accessible without removing the knee guard". Guess contortionists were standard at the shops back then...

These pics may help - not sure what year car this unit is from though. Looks like 4 bulb holders in the molded plastic but the actual number of wired bulbs may vary. I think there are 2 bulbs in my 1987

I recall that the unit can not be pulled out and the wires are extremely short. And the sockets are very difficult to snap back in. And it is very hard to get your hands in there.

Maybe I was just having a bad day? Or maybe they meant easily removed compared to a factory fender glued on from end to end with undercoat? (And an inch of undercoat on the inaccessible bolts.)

The bulbs are not hard to get in and out. You can just reach under the dash and pull them out. You want to check the bulb holders though; the reason that the bulbs fall out is usually the holder has melted from the heat. Fixing that requires removal of the whole assembly. It's tedious, as it requires undoing the wires on the heater controls in the trunk and working them through the dash. Figure on an hour to get one out and a little more to get one back in.

4 bulbs. I replaced them all with LED's. I was amazed how distorted the lamp sockets were from the bulb heat. The super bright LED's allowed me to heat shrink the LED's to the socket and not have to worry about heat.
