Im planning to replace the uppoer stearing column bearing this week. Im doing it the proper long haul way.
My question is: once you ahve the stearing column assembly out of the car, how do you remove the top bearing from the essembly? Cheers

Pete,
You're talking about replacing the roller bearing, not the nylon bushing, right... I manufacture a MDS (oil impregnated) Nylon support bushing that replaces the factory bushing for the steering column which Pelican Parts carries in their catalog. P/N PEL-ML-STR I believe the only thing that prevens you from removing the roller bearing from the top of the column is the steering shaft. That is the reason you have to drop the steering shaft to gain enough room to have access to the ID of the roller bearing for a slide hammer to remove the roller bearing. I had a board member drill holes in the roller bearing face and inserted sheet metal screws and used a slide hammer to remove the bearing. I think he used chisels, drills, picks, and the slide hammer, it was ugly, but he did get it out. Probably with less work that dropping the steering shaft. It's a thorny problem, maybe some other members can chime in...

Why? Why put yourself through it, the end result isnt worth the effort when a bearing race will do.. the part to use 928.347.739.02

I recently purchased a nylon support bushing from Mitch. Haven't had a need to replace mine, just yet. Mitch is a class act, prompt email follow-up and provided great information on the install. Nice to see that Pelican is carrying his part.

I just installed Mitch's steering column bushing this weekend. (Must be the time for all of the late 80's Carreras to have them replaced). In any case, took all of about 30 minutes and worth the money.
I had some steering column movement that made the wheel deflect all around while driving. I figured I'd replace the bushing and pray it wasn't something worse that might cost more $ or be out of my ability to fix. I'd definitely start with the bushing if you have any problems like that. Mitch's instructions were spot on and made it a really simple repair. David

Retraction...
I said earlier that a member had drilled the face of the roller bearing and used sheet metal screws and a slide hammer as well as other destructive tools to remove the bearing.
I was just talking to an expert and he said there's no way you could drill holes in the bearing since it's harden steel.
