Adapt '77 930 box to later 9 bolt engine?
Hello all, I'm fairly new to Porsches so go easy on me. I had a 914 a few years back, great car!
I've purchased a '77 930 gearbox (short bell housing) that came with a new Sachs pressure plate, tob and disc. I don't have an engine yet but would like to know if a later engine with the 9 bolt crank flange can be easily mated up to this box with an off-the-shelf flywheel, preferably lightweight. Specifically, the distance from the crank flange to the clutch mating surface of the flywheel would need to match the early '76-'77 turbo flywheel. The pressure plate interface with the flywheel would need to be the same. I've determined that the pressure plate has the same bolt pattern on later years so that is not a question, just the recess that it is nested in. I managed to check the PP against an '80-'88 flywheel and the recess that the PP sits down in doesn't match, the outer lip is smaller on the flywheel. Finally, the pilot bearing would need to be in the same relative position with an ID to match the input shaft and the OD to match the engine. The Pelican sales guys thought that the '78-'79 turbo flywheel would do the trick but wasn't absolutely sure. They recommended the forum so....... Thanks, Mark |

you would also need a 930 flywheel to relate to the 930 clutch items and a 4 speed shifter, but regardless, you won't like it. it's too high geared. some folks pay a lot for those to be used in other applications.

Yes, it is an 'other application'. Tube frame, lightweight, the box has shorter gears in it. Already have it installed, cable shifted and a Wilwood hydraulic slave adapted as well.
![]() I was waiting on deciding on an engine, almost went with a Chevy LS and have the Kennedy adapter for that application but I want to do something a little different, maybe a Porsche turbo engine. I don't want to spend a bunch of time trying to get custom parts made. The flywheel seems to be key here, someone must have done this before? Thanks, Mark |

Use the 78-79 flywheel and ring gear use this because it uses the late 70s pilot bearing
Use the 76/77 clutch package Bruce |

fyi, KNIGHTRACE, easily found on this board, has a running 79 930 engine if you decide to go that way. Good luck on your project, and show us some pics of it.
