Mirrors, Blower, Windows work without key
I have a 1984 911 Targa with a strange electrical problem. Fuses 1-6 always have 12v if the key is in or out. I can operate the windows, fresh air blower in the dash, power mirrors and rear defroster without a key. It does not matter if I open a door or not. I do not hear any relays click when I connect the battery unless I turn on the rear defroster.
I did notice that the previous owner replaced the ignition switch. Thanks for the help, Mark |

the windows work with the ignition off anyway, the other things should not be on with the ignition off.

Yikes...sounds like a battery drain waiting to happen. Something's not right.

Check your interior light door plungers (or whatever they're called). I seem to remember reading about battery drain and various electricals working if the little switches that activate your interior lights are shot. I think I have a similar issue, but w/o the battery drain (yet), since I pulled the hack alarm install from a PO.

I think I will look into the ignition switch. I noticed that the red/yellow wire that goes from the ignition switch to the fuse panel is 12v all the time at the fuse panel. The wiring diagram shows this wire as switched. It should only be hot with the ignition on. I will check it at the ignition switch to see if it is hot. If so I guess the mechanical portion of the ignition switch is bad.
The previous owner swapped the electrical part of the ignition switch 3 times in a couple of months time. Mark |
