Unhappy broken head stud

I was adjusting the valve clearances (engine is out) on Friday and noticed that one of the head studs is broken. It just fell out when I turned the engine on the stand. I checked all the others with an allen key and they seemed tight although I didn't torque them (29lb?)

The car is a 77 carrera 3.0 which is being painted at the moment. The engine has been rebuilt four years ago but they did not do the head studs.

The engine ran really strong prior to finding this. My question is simple, should I leave it and continue to use the engine or do I need new studs which from a cost point of view I could do without right now.

Opinion seems to be 50/50 on this and the rennlist board. The case is aluminium and the stud has broke and not pulled its thread. It looks as though it has been broke for quite a while judging by the colour of the break.

regards

Andrew

Cool

If the engine is out right now...by all means repair it! Unless you have some reason to get this damaged engine back on the road ASAP...just take your time and make it perfect...esp if its going into a beautiful, newly painted car (don't want to be "all show and no go" eh?). One broken stud certainly stressed the remaining studs on that cylinder and its probably only a matter of time before (if it has not already) begins coming apart and costing you compression.

Good Luck.
Nick.

Andrew,

When I pulled the engine on my 78 911 SC Targa 3.0, had three broken studs, and there wasn't any damage to the cylinders or heads. I would recommend replacing all of them, as long as you have the engine out. It's much easier now, than later.

Andrew,

The lower 12 Dilivar studs are the only ones that are of real concern, and 12 x $10.25 = $123 are the costs to purchase OEM steel studs to replace them with. Also needed are a top-end gasket set, Loctite red heavy-duty thread locking compound, NAPA Loctite 518 Gasket Maker, and NAPA Loctite Kleen 'N Prime spray activator. Not exactly an overwhelmingly costly shopping list! It could be much worse!
