Fan Removal

Is there a correct tool and process to remove the fan off the alternator ?

I currenltly have a five blade fan and need to update to an 11 blade fan.

If any one can shed some light on this process it woul be appreciated.

Michael

sure, I do it the same way as John Walker does it:remove the fan/alt, remove all the bolts, whack the outer edge on a big block of wood (not very hard, (a 8x8 block works good), hang on to the alternator, rotate the housing, repeat the whacking till the alt drops out. don't crack the fan housing in the process. Thats it. don't loose the key in the alt shaft. When your done with the alt, just drop it back in the housing, add the new fan and re install, the fan gets tightened with the fan belt nut.
WHILE YOUR IN THERE, clean the engine cooling fins, check the alt. bearings, polish the new fan/air path, look for cracks in the alt housing (maybe not), put the wires on correctly! (I take a picture of the alt. wiring prior to removal) enjoy!!

Why would he have to pull out the housing?

Should be able to remove belt & pulley half ... fan will slide right off. Just need to keep close eye on woodruff key.

All the ones I have worked on, do not slide off. A puller was needed on mine.

IMHO you can't really clean the fins with the fan shroud in the way. Very tight space. Little bang for the buck here.

You can check / listen to the alternator bearings by simply spinning the fan with the belt off.

You can look for cracks in the housing visually - use a mirror and flash light if necessary.

I would try to remove the fan without pulling the entire housing. It is NO FUN pulling the wires off of the back of the alternator. Again, very tight space and you are likely working with very brittle wires (not to mention the tiny washers that like to find their way out of your reach). I have pulled mine at least half a dozen times ... it was only fun the first time.

Just trying to offer practical advise and help save you some time.

you can remove it with a pull in line with the alternator shaft. I thread 14 ga house wiring thru the holes in the fan an use a tool such as the pulley wrench to pull on the wires - couple or three tugs and it comes off the shaft

puller

harbor freight for 15 bucks or less has pullers. i ould use a puller but if you really dont have access to onen then use this method as it worked for me.

buy a plastic sewer t-fitting,,, 4 or 6 inch i dont remember which size, big enough to fit around the alternator but small enough to catch the fan.
put the alternator into the pipe
put the nut on the alternator just enough to cover the threads in teh nut.
whack teh nut witha plastic hammer a few times, and teh alternator will drop to the towel.

make sure that the fan ring is the only thing touching the plastic fitting not the blades.

this worked for me last year when i was having a problem with althernators and i must have installed and removed the fan 10 or more times.
