What's the Pelican in Pelican Parts?

I am sure it's so obvious that it will be embarrassing, or it is something I should just know, but I don't - so can anyone tell me why it's called Pelican Parts? What's the Pelican significance?

sorta like elephant racing - storage in the front??? I don't know for sure, it always seemed an obscure reference to me...

Wayne once said that it has to do with the location of their headquarters in El Segundo, CA which is by the beach.

That was as they saw a pelican fly by them while trying to think of a name for the business. If you do a search and read through a lot of stuff you can find it here. I think its amongst the threads regarding the pelican logo (stickers and such).

It started with the Wayne and all the other DIY'ers saying "Hell, I can do that!!"

This was shortened to "Hell I can!!"..but it still did not sound quite right for a business.

Right then is when the pelican flew by and the rest is history.

There was serious consideration given to calling it "Duck Parts", with the obvious tie-in of ducktails for older911s.
The website would have had a soundtrack with slightly changed lyrics proclaiming, "We will, we will Duck you!"
Then someone thought of what might happen if a letter in the name got changed.

Oh well.

I always guessed it was either due to the beach or that Wayne really liked seafood.

That's pretty much it. There are more details than that, but that's the basic gist. Turns out, along the lines of Apple Computer and Amazon.com, the Pelican brand name is pretty memorable.
