Mahle Gas Burner
Hi,
just got my new 1977 911. It came with Mahle Gasburner wheels. I am not sure if I like them. I thought they are more 914 wheels. Have these ever been an option for a 911? Thanks! Boris ![]() ![]() |

Boris,
If you don't like them you can make a fair bit of change selling those. They are a big money collectible wheel for the longnose crowd. They came on 1970 911's in addition to the 914-6

those are very rare and very collectable. if you don't use them, I'd refinish them and hold onto them. They are becoming more valuable every day.

Those wheels are worthless. I'll buy them, $100 each.

Great looking narrow body mid-year, love the chrome trim! Hang on to those wheels (but get some more correct fuchs or cookie-cutters for your car). Also, that trim on the wheel arches and rockers is a bit rare as well. Nice car.

Lightest magnesium wheel made...only problem is one size.....some peopl have succesfully widened them but it's rare and expensive.
They are real popular with the early VW crowd after they modify the lug pattern... |

You can literally pic one of these wheels (w/no tire mounted) up with your pinky finger...they are that light. They were optional for 1970-72 911s and 914s, and they look much better on those:

the 914 4 bolt version is slightly different...if i remember the spoke count is different
many like the light weight and the different look.

The 4 bolt version isn't magnesium to my knowledge. The 5 bolt version was an option on 914-6's, not 914-4's.

You're right Matt...the 914 4 bolt Mahle is a cast aluminum wheel...
the 5 bolt is the only mag wheel.... Boris as Matt said you will have no problem selling these...they look in good condition...a little new paint and they will be great...

To be honest, the wheels in "very good condition" are worth as much as the rest of your car.

Looks like you have a really nice narrow body IB car. Good find. How about some more pics of the car. That wheel well trim looks great. Agree with all said regarding the Mahle wheels. Properly finished, they look great on longhood cars. Refinish them and hang on to them.

just a thought from someone without a lot of experience...please don't flame me!!!
![]() seen some threads from guys who media-blasted their magnesium fans, then coated them with some exotic metal preservative (can't remember the name of the stuff). Then allowed the preservative oil to settle and "mellow" the magnesium, which gave a great-looking effect and contributed to a low maintenance factor. I wonder how well that would work with these Gas Burners.

Opening this old post again because my recent acquisition- a 1967- 912 Denver/Boulder, CO car came with Mahles in excellent condition. I'm torn between keeping them because they're 9.5 lbs. and handle well with the 185/15 Vredestein tires they came with and I kind of like them or switching to steel and hub- love that original elemental VW look. What is there present value? Maybe they can finance some restored Lemerz chrome and caps? BD

I’ve got a set of 6x15 Fuchs I would trade, plus some cash to you. Think about how many $$$ you need if you’re interested. I’m in NoCo. We could even meet at Discount Tire if you want to keep your rubber, and I’ll pay to install it.
