Interior sound mat under rear shelf

I had a water leak from the rear window seal. I removed the rear window. I took the rear shelf out. The sound pad looked fine but when I lifted it, the dryer lint padding attached to it was soaked on the passenger side.

The rubber pad weighs as much as a toddler. What can I expect if I just leave it off and put the rear shelf back on?

No rust though. I know I have rust in the seat buckets, but that's another proj.

Thanks for any insight.

i would imagine that it would be a little louder but i can't say if your ear will be able to tell the difference in a few dbs.

It will be quite a bit louder without the rear sound padding.

O.B.E.D.

I'm going to upgrade my firewall insulation and if you want to borrow my pad until you upgrade yours, you're welcome to use mine which is in great shape. I'm assuming that my "84" will fit your car.

I can tell you the noise level will be significantly higher...

I'll be in the DFW area on Nov. 13-14, PM if you want to get together...

Thanks Mitch.

I'll know if it is driving me crazy by then. Look forward to the meeting. I'll PM you.

Ahh Fredericksburg. I love that town. So does my wife. I may be there after thanksgiving walking the streets.

Best,

Lee

It's fun for a while, but the noise is constant. My 911 is 90% track use so I make due, but if I drove it on the street regularly I would put the pad back in.

AppBiz makes a nice light weight replacement for that heavy sound pad that was water soaked.

The Appbiz sound pad is the one that goes in the engine compartment. This post is about the sound padding in the interior that is under the rear parcel shelf, back seats, etc.

I looked on the AppBiz web site before I posted, but couldn't find it. Definitely a need for people who wish to go lightweight!

i just put down a few extra layers to help with sound today. when the engine was out last week i noticed that all of the factory stuff inside the engine compartment was gone, most likely due to age.

skip to last post to see the parcel shelf.

new audio install

They make both however the interior sound pad is not on their website. Call them up and you can order one. Mine arrived Friday. Very nice piece of kit.

I don't think the engine side pad makes much difference. I haven't had one for years.

I do have the original interior pad, though.

people often say this when comparing their old, internally disintegrated pad with a bare bulkhead.

the real question is what a new one is like compared with nothing - the new ones weigh very little and are easy to install

it is usually important to stop noise before it strikes a bulkhead - once that happens it can only be dissipated; if you catch it before it impinges on the bulkhead, then it will not be transmitted at all

nother thing to do is ask if P AG puts these on the new cars - the 997, GT2 and GT3
