Factory 3.1 Engine in 911SC ??

Is anyone out there familiar with a 3.1 liter engine option available from the factory in the early 80s?
My understanding is that they were for Europe only. Has anyone ever seen one in the US?

From Porsche AG, anything is possible if they don’t have to meet country import and emissions regulations. It just takes inclination and deep pockets.

There were racing 10.3:1 CR, 96 mm Mahle Nikasil racing P&Cs available in that era. They were the compliance size for SCCA and other venues. For “a few dollars more” , you could have Porsche build your engine with these. I don’t think these were ‘legal’ for any country in Europe but no one checked. Not so today. You just claim export to the mid-east.

I think Mahle only made one production run of these as the quickly disappeared. There were also several other ‘bolt on’ big P&C sets available – up to 98 mm and various CR. I have two ’79 911SC engines with the 9.1:1 CR, 98 mm versions.

Best,
Grady

There is someone that has discussed these engines in this forum a few years ago. I believe he dis-assembled one for a rebuild and found that he had something unique. You might try a search and see if you can find the thread.

Many thanks for the link to the previous thread about this rare engine option. Very interesting theory about the motor having been the test bed for future production engines.
I have been told that several hundred were built in the early eighties prior to the introduction of the 3.2 in 1984.

Brian- you are correct about the karma issue, serves the guy right that a rare engine slipped through his dishonest fingers!
