Part Unknown

When I removed the fender from the left side of my 87 Carrera there was an unknown (to me) part. It appears to be black ABS plastic. I know its not the washer bottle....It has two hoses going into it. It is empty, whatever it is. I am just curious as to what it is and is it required to be put back? I am thinking it is some sort of vapor recovery tank....but that is just a guess....any help or ideas?

It's an expansion tank for the fuel tank:

That is kinda what I thought....now for the second part of my question....does it need to be reinstalled? Is it just for those times when the tank is completely full?

Technically it can be removed, it's to compensate thermal expansion of fuel without leaving any vapors out into air

P.S. You have to route breather hose outside of the trunk and I think it's a bit of a risk, because fuel vapors can easily start burning

You should leave your vapor recovery system intact and functioning. Gasoline fumes are toxic and need to be managed properly. I addition to the riisks to your body, the fumes may find their way to an ignition source and them you wil have a KFC (Kentucky Fried Car).

It's a sort of canister , isn't it ????

We've got the same under the right rear fender but it seems like a bottle.
