915 Rebuild Guesstimates

I bought a rebuilt 915 a while back and installed in my '79 SC. My original transmission is sitting there and I would really like to rebuild it.
It had approximately 190,000 miles on it when I removed it. The transmission actually shifted very well with the exception of a grind going into 3rd gear.
Anyone care to guess a range of what this may cost me? I plan to rebuild it myself.

I don't know how much it's going to cost, but what I can promise you is whatever number the first person responds with will be followed by a dozen responses telling you it's 5x that much. There are 2 things people in the forum can agree on: Brad Penn oil, and "whatever you think it's going to cost, double it."

The answer "it depends" is about as accurate as it gets in this case. Is it just "worn" or do you have chunks of gear teeth coming out in the oil?

Assume for a moment, that you are not wanting "upgrades" like reinforced this-and-that from Wevo or adding on a cooler, or exotic gear ratios which can get into big bucks real quick. You won't know until you take it apart and then tally up which parts need to be replaced.

Prevailing wizdom is all the synchros and dog teeth. Probably sliders and hubs for some gears. Some will say to replace all the bearings which I think is overkill, especially since you have a spare.

With 190K on the clock, good chance you'll have a spun case bearing race. Hope that the R&P is still in good shape.

You want me to guess? I'd say $1000 to $2000 in parts. But it is doable, and if you do it yourself you'll know it's done right. Folks here will help you.

With 190,000 miles you'll need the list bellow for sure and maybe some machining work to fix the PS Bearing support area in the case.

x5 Synchro rings
1st and 2nd gear dog teeth.
1st/2nd gear slider
3rd/4th gear slider
2x Differential support bearings.

Note: This list does not include brake bands and blocks for each of the gears.

When you have your gearbox. Start a thread and post some pics.
There are some very talented and experienced people here who will chime in and provide advice.

Porsche Trans Tools... You can make most of these. Lots of info and photos in various threads here.
You'll need a good torque wrench and a normal set of tools.
Lastly... A clean work area.

So looking at the list you could do it for about $2,000 US. Maybe a little less if your gearbox is in good shape and doesn't need any machining.
You'd call this a refresh not rebuild.

But this could soon blow out to over $3,000 if it does need machining and more parts like dog teeth for 3rd or 4th.

If there are any issue with the final drive and differential then it can soon go over $4,000 because this would best be left to the experts to resolve.
You could re fresh the rest of the gearbox but to set-up the final drive you need some very special tools.

What is your goal? Fixing it so it shifts properly, or fixing it so you don't touch it for 75,000 miles? the two are very different costs.

Once you learn how to do it yourself you might lean towards doing the minimum.

I wonder what folks experiences have been with the $1500 exchange units?

You get what you pay for.....anything can be wrong with them and gears are matched sets....they even have inscribed serial numbers unique to each gear. Plus, the intermediate bearing on high HP engine combos....BTDT.

Expect to pay between $2100 and $3000 depending on what it needs.

If I'm too cheap then every Pelican BBS user in SoCal should be bringing me their cars for the best deal in town.

- 30+ years experience
- Owner-operated
- Family business (myself and my father doing the work)

^^^^--- I'm starting to sound like a commercial

And I'll take all the 914 cores you've got ... with 904 mainshafts.

Got any 4-speed or Sporto trannys laying around?
