What is the correct trim color for a 73 ‘S’

The “Porsche” lettering on my 73 ‘S’ is golden colored but the “911 S” and “2.4” is chrome colored. Is this the right combination???

Gold letters were an option (or perhaps even standard) for 911S. Although I think you could have ordered it on any model. As you can see, I am a bit vague on the parameters on what models got it, but for sure your 911S COULD have come with it. I have a 1971 911T with S options and it had gold lettering. I did not like it and went back to chrome letters. To each his own.

Your "2.4" looks good, but the "Porsche" and "911S" should be Black, afaik.

Grant has it right.

All black; horn grills, engine grill, around the outside of the turn signal lenses, rear deck lettering, and model emblem. Anything else was probably changed along the way. Having said all that, there is an outside chance an original owner special ordered the lettering or emblem in silver but I have never seen it.

According to PET, the gold and chrome lettering were -'71 models and the black lettering was for '72-. That being said I have seen many original '72-'73 911's that have the chrome lettering and model insignia. I do not know if this was a dealer installed thing or if it was Porsche just being Porsche and using up existing stock. The other possibility is that PET is wrong.

From my experience the Porsche parts catalogue is rarely wrong, instead it is a very good source for what parts were originally used as it pertains to early 911s.

Brian,

I agree and I use the parts catalogue for a lot of sleuthing when it comes to these cars. One thing to remember though is that in the earlier to mid years of Porsche they had to be thrifty when it came to using parts that were in stock.

Rolf, they should be black. Look at all period broshures etc, all black anodized for 72/73. Those who have silver/gold on their 73's can presume one of the previous owners or maybe dealership have replaced the original black ones.

The chrome, black and gold letters as well as the 911S, 911E or 911T insignia's are available in a bunch of catalogs. Check to see if Pelican has them. I have a 1973.5T and I switched my chrome 911T and PORSCHE letters to gold because it went well with the Sepia Brown. In my orginal sales brochure I see black and silver on all cars presented. If my 911 were orange I would opt for the black letters. The 2.4 does not come in gold.

On your orange 911, black might look great. The large black front and rear bumperettes came on the 1973.5T.

Just a repeat on the whole black rubber bumper thing....

I have an MFI '73 T that came with them as well. It appears not to be related specifically to the '73.5 cars but either to when they were sold in the US (as in how late in '72/73) or a transitional switch during the model year.

I had always thought that they were dictated by US law in '73 but I know of '73 spec cars that came without them so the answer has to be somewhere else...
