Although I doubt it's being considered, I was thinkin' how cool it would be to sort of tuck away a car like this - into a barn...and just let the dust settle and relax for a while.

...It has to be the right car for it and it is imo.

"When I went over to the dealer and asked if they had forgotten to put oil back in after the oil change...the guilt was all over their face, but they would not admit it."

Very nice, but this shop is not a "dealer" with a bunch of minimum-wage mechs, it's an excellent independent Porsche shop with just three experienced techs, not counting the highly experienced owner, and they don't "forget to put the oil back." And if I were you, I'd buy a Mercedes.

Matt Smith 11-24-2009 09:24 PM

Steve- lots of second guessing on this thread with little evidence. Let the original poster reply or bury it IMO.

Looks like a nice car- still has the 1972 only USA T yellow MFI shroud. This always makes me suspicious: suspicious in that it is a hugely great car that should garner more respect than it has....so far...

But no MFI in the photo.

Maybe he took the photos while the "tech" was fixing his car. Guess we'll never know now.

My gut tells me he's gone for good.

You assume a lot. The point is...lots of folks make mistakes.

Why buy a Mercedes? I prefer a Lexus...and they gave me a brand new one to replace the one they broke.

i spoke with owner!! he has agree to let me watch rip down of motor today!! Steve seems to me a know it all!! people make mistakes and has no idea of this car situation!!! when i brought the car to this individual who was highly recommend i might say the first thing before i put one dime into it was to tell him is the motor fine!after 5 k when i'm about to pick up motor blows!!! it seems pretty funny how a car motor runs great for hours until it is removed then when put back in that suddenly without one noise as the tech said that it just stopped!! the reason i bought it to a real expert was for him to watch all pressure of the oil and temp!! i don't expect him to tell me know i wasn't watching the oil pressure exceptional just after ripping the entire motor and transmission out and replacing the rear seal of the engine!! i wouldn't leave the car running outside without supervision after that and I'm no pro!! lets see what we find !!! one thing about me is i don't tell lies and is an honest person!! it's gonna kill Steve if a mistake was made !! all i did was ask a question on this board and the nuts came out!! simple question is how do i know if a mistake was made not that there was one made!! you gotta know how to read Steve!!!!

johnm1469 11-25-2009 04:16 AM

wow steve knows a shop that doesn't make mistakes!!!! perfect mechanics!! that's truely amazing!! time for me to go to church with steve!!!

If it's a 1973 1/2 it should have CIS. My 73.5 came with yellow shroud and CIS originaly. I was told by a friend at dealership the shroud color could vary as Porsche would sometimes use up the old stock before swithiching. The car definitely looks modified. 18k seems like a lot for this car.

Jeff Burger 11-25-2009 04:38 AM

It could be anything - can't wait to see . MY first car was an MGB it seized suddenly - working fine one day seized the next. My dad and I started to pull the motor and as we were separating it we heard a distinct click. We both looked at each other in wonder. we checkd the motor and just like that it wasn't siezed. diagnosis? The worn starter drive gear mismatched with the worn ring gear and jammed up the motor tighter than a frogs ass .

"wow steve knows a shop that doesn't make mistakes!!!! perfect mechanics!! that's truely amazing!! time for me to go to church with steve!!!"

Sorry, I was just overreacting to the seeming hysteria of your initial posts and your apparent willingness to blame Tom for not putting in oil or something of the sort, when a 35-year-old car suddenly dies for no reason.

Good luck on the teardown, though. If you'd like to take a break, come on over and I'll buy you lunch. Tom knows where to find me--just look for the yellow SC in the driveway...up on jackstands, as usual.

But we can't do church. I'm an atheist.

Rusty 356 11-25-2009 05:04 AM

I recently sold my 72 T with MFI. This looked to me to have the MFI filter housing on the console. Mine also had a yellow shroud. It has now relocated back in its homeland.
The 18K may be a little steep, but should draw some lookers.

Steve is a good guy and know a lot. He made his living from writing and you can learn a lot from his advice on writing skills.

That said, this forum has recently been plagued by jokers that show here on their 1st post and start yanking our chains.

I think you a are a serious, honest guy with a legit problem. None of us were there and we call only assume and guess. Many here have given you their best guess. Don''t kill the messenger just because you don't like the message.

Long story short, your guy is offering you a good deal on a rebuild. You'd be hard pressed to PROVE he did anything wrong. You'll have a very hard time getting $18K out of this thing with a blown engine.......Fix it and enjoy it. It will last another 30 years..........G'luck.

T77911S 11-25-2009 07:08 AM

its beautifull car. fix the motor. sounds like you have a good deal for the rebuild. i liked the pics of the shop. looks big, very clean, other porsches in there, no fords or chevy's.

6k in it so far, 5K or so for rebuild, sell at $20k and make a quick and nice profit. you could get more but if money is tight, $20k would sell it quick.

ossiblue 11-25-2009 07:18 AM

Woke up this morning to find the OP bid adieu and deleted his posts. Glad to see he did acknowledge a tear down is being done and I hope he will report any and all findings for the benefit of all who use this forum.

kidrock 11-25-2009 08:17 AM

beautiful car!!! i think you should keep it!!! find a good shop and get a $5K rebuild quick!!! or you can sell it as is for $18K!!! i think that is a good deal too!!! don't forget to keep in touch!!!

John, I hope it turns out for you. It seems like a nice car. But could you, please, try to use correct punctuation when you post? I know how to read, and reading your posts gives me the impression of:

OHMYGODTOTALHYSTERIAFREAKOUTIMLOSINGITRIGHTNOW!!!! !!!!!!.

Calm down, ditch the exclamation points. Use caps when appropriate. Everything will work out. Good luck.

Folks/!!

That's a great photo John. What I see is a nice, clean, iron-barrel original 72T motor. To casual observers, the slightly rusty look gives them away. Is it matching numbers? More pics please.

I don't wish to sound mean, but I'm betting if you wrote a little more clearly then this could be a nice thread to follow. When I mean clearly I'm talking the basics: full stops, paragraphs and all that. I'm sorry for having to point that out, and am far from perfect myself SmileWavy

Not that it's a bad thing (I wish I spoke another language), but I suspect John's 2nd language is "engrish". He may be having difficulty expressing himself, to include grammar and punctuation. And, as most Eastern Europeans are angry at the world, it could explain his attitude.

On the other hand, I smell another UncleBilly...err...I mean "Vageen".

Matt Smith 11-25-2009 09:15 PM

Fwiw, I called Vageen out, knowing I may face the wrath of Dempsey...!! !! !!

Or worse, a ban from Nostatic

Thax for calling him out.......He suckered in a lot of good folks here. I spotted him for day one, called him on it and then Wayne said he as "disappointed" in some of us........Vageen needs to know, this is not "our first rodeo"!!!!!!!!!!!

eapcpa 11-26-2009 04:11 AM

In one of those pics, It looks like it had an engine fire.

BYW: I have no patience for the attitude of this guy. Something smells here.

johnm1469 11-26-2009 04:36 AM

yes the tech said motor had an upgrade of tensioner which was a good sign .. numbers do match so would be nice to keep everything matching. seems to me once i get this motor rebuilt nothing else could go wrong.if anyone has heat exchangers for sale give me a private email with photos. if i decide to rebuild might as well go all the way.heat exchangers must fit 1973.5 carbsSmileWavy

Hey, just a thought, but while you're in there......................
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

E Sully 11-26-2009 05:28 AM

johnm, What is your engine serial #? If this is a 73.5 it should have had CIS injection, not carbs. Updated pressure fed tensioners look like attached pic.
Matt Smith, 73.5T originaly had iron barrels.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1259245690.jpg

johnm1469 11-26-2009 06:22 AM

yes the carbs are not original. i never said the carbs were. the tech mech said my tensioners are an upgrade and within 10 years. i personlly are no pro on these cars and thats why it is a pros-shop. i'm only relaying what he told me.once he rips down the motor we will know what happened and the cause. the tech checked the numbers and said it was the original numbers on motor.

RWebb 11-26-2009 11:06 AM

think about hot rod mods since you have to tear it down anyway, you may as well build it up good.

carb type cams are one thing to be sure of

for more $$ could build to a 2.5L or 2.7L

sorry you had this happen, but your fixed motor could go 200k miles

Formerly Steve Wilkinson 12-01-2009 09:18 AM

And the update on the teardown is...?
