Steering wheel for my '68

I just got done installing a 68 sport seat in my 68. Now I want to upgrade the stock plastic steering wheel. I see the prototipo is available from pelican but I read that it can be considered too small and cover the gauges up. So maybe 37 or 38 cm would be good? Basically I just want a sportier feel with a thicker leather covered rim.

Any suggestions?

Fritter,

I had the 350mm Prototipo for awhile. I didn't like the way it covered up my gauges, and felt too small for me. I like the look and feel of a bigger wheel with a thin grip. If you are looking for a thicker grip in a size similar to your stock wheel, I'd recommend the Prototipo in the 380mm size. I think this is very close in size to your original, and shouldn't cover up too much of the gauges.

Hey Mike, I had a Prototipo in my lightweight and while it felt racey, it was too small for my liking. I installed an RS 380mm wheel in its place and the size is just perfect. I also have a 380mm 914 wheel in my T and I like that size much better. I have the Prototipo and that 914 wheel (and another Momo design) if you want to try them for a while. Give me a ring if you do.

Mike

Score a cheap 914 wheel and have the rim wrapped in double leather!

I have a momo mod/07 in my race car, basically a modern version of the prototipo with a deeper dish, just doesn't LOOK right in a 1971 car. . . the teener wheels are cheaper than dirt and can be cleaned up to look like an uber-expensive 380mm RS wheel. . . .

380 seems to be the consensus, thanks!

I measured my stock plastic steering wheel and it's 400mm center to center, 420mm outside to outside lip. What is the "standard" for this measurement, meaning, when you say 380mm, is that center to center?

wheel for your 68

I have a gorgeous Racemark wheel that is not only period-correct for your car, but is also like new. Racemark products were the products marketed by Mark Donahue during the 60's and 70's. It is a beautiful piece and I have both the wheel and the hub kit. If you have an interest I could send photos. Let me know, contact me at the email address below.

Here is a picture of my 370mm (OD) Prototipo:

Date stamp is 7-78, gauges are unobstructed from driver perspective.

I have an early prototipo at 360mm that I love. It covers the gauges slightly but it doesn't bother me. My favorite though is this 1970s Momo "1" wheel at 380mm. Great wheel but not so easy to find
Cheers,

Here's my Les Leston from the 60's at 370mm center to center.

And here's where the 350mm Prototipo and my original ended up:

A friend now owns the Prototipo and the Les Leston was refinished in exchange for a valve adjustment.

Love those flat prototipos. Those can't be that hard to find correct? How much do the older prototipos go for? Does the new proto hub bolt right up to the oldies?
