central locking

My 85 911 has central locking. Why did Porsche install central locking when it only has two doors? I mean you just have to reach over. (a little bit) Was it just for super luxury? Or am I missing something? Nick

They had to make something different from the 84 to charge more

Peter Zimmerman's book has more detail but that is what I got from it.

Well, they did lay out the spark wires differently too but besides that exact same car.

In 86 they modified the front bumper to let more air in the oil cooler plus a fan.

Oh yeah and larger air vent in the cab.

A quick way to lock from the inside; helps for safety in the dark, or in 'questionable' areas. Jump in, push the button, and done.

Yep, it doesn't hurt, and by now, no extra cost relative to just buying a used 911 anyway; in '87 it was only a $325 add anyway; less than 1%....

And your companion isn't left standing outside in the rain, waiting for you to get in and unlock the doors.

My ex wife laughed at me when I installed aftermarket central locking in my SC.
Not an easy thing to do on a 78 and it's tied into the the alarm/key less entry.

I could have just installed it in the drivers door only but somehow it felt right to do both.

Since then I've gotten a divorce, raised my kids on my own and I still have my SC with central locking.
It still feels right... lol

Actually it makes more sense for a RHD car... As you know our cars are RHD but the hood, trunk and fuel flap releases are still on the left hand side of the car.
So when you need to open any of these you just tap the button and open the passenger door.

I found that after replacing the 33 year old broken door handle mechanisms with "newer" but not "new"units, fitting central locking meant I wasn't having to get the key into the lock barrel to get in.

+1 ... A very underrated advantage.

I haven't put a key in the locks for about 10 years. Maybe I should check that they still work???

You guys must have different central locking than I do. I still need to put my key in the door lock to get it to open. It just unlocks both doors. That kinda sounds like wireless remote locks...

Yes. When you de-activate the alarm the car unlocks. But I put the whole system in. Not OEM. I don't know about the 80s cars.

Ahh yeah! Mine had the actuators in the doors already so I just needed the brain and the remote controls, Ended up buying a whole system on ebay for $25 and just cherry picked the bits I needed to make it work.
