"Correct" tail for a RoW 911SC?
I have an SC with a 964-style tail... having a tail has it's advantages, but I sure do love the clean look of a stock SC deck lid.
In my indecision, I'm trying to figure out what the actual tail options were for an '81 RoW 911SC. I'm not too fond of the Tea Tray style tail, especially for a Targa (just personal preference). This thread is from 2002, but seems to offer several different theories: Any chance a tail was an SC option? Any authorities out there on this subject? Pictures would help, I have a hard time keeping all the different tail names people throw around straight in my head. Thanks.

I appreciate the answer and the pic... but hopefully there will be some options with less rubber!

The "tea tray" was the only spoiler available, on the SC turbo or not, I'm not an authority the part 93051202100 rubber is identical on both, so the base must be the same as well.

Being all rubber they were heavy and you'd be hard pressed to find a good one now.

The all rubber tail is correct for the first few years of the SC. They started delivering them with a 3.3 turbo style tail in 1981. The only other tail they used was on the 1980 Weissach edition. That one was similar to the 3.0 turbo tail, except that it lacked the additional small grille on the top rear surface.

Pete, I never ran across that one as OEM. I could always be wrong, on a 78-83 SC model.

I used to have that style tail. It weighs a ton. I replaced it with newer style tail that is much lighter. I still have the rubber one in my garage.

The all rubber tail above is in the shape of a "carrerra tail"... is that right?
And when you refer to a "turbo tail"... that's the tea tray style, right? Then there are several diferences in the grills... one vs two, or whether the whole tail is flat or the grill slopes down in the middle of the tail. Are those grill differences the only distinction between different "turbo tails"? Then the Weisach (sp?) is the shape of the carrera tail, with a flat grill? Thanks.

My ROW SC is stock(on the outside). "Tea tray" rear spoiler.
Sure, I'll post a pic. ![]()

Check out the Weissach edition SC- it has a tail like the 76-77 turbo sans the extra small rear grill
The Carrera 3.0 (76/77 row) also was available with this tail

I don't think they ever made it to the US but I have seen them on UK, Euro and Australian delivered cars. I also saw a "Japanese Import" in a local car yard with one. (1978, Left hand Drive) The two I've seen in Australia were both 79 models. Not sure about years for UK or Euro

Thank you all for your input. Let's see if I can organize this into one thought....
Okay, we've got the early Turbo tail: ![]() The later Turbo Tail: ![]() ![]() What I believe to be an IROC or Carrera tail: ![]() And the Weissach tail: ![]() Then there's the all-rubber tail: ![]() Of all these, it seems the only period-correct tail for an '81 RoW SC would be the late-style turbo tail, or possibly the all rubber tail. Were there no Carrera or Duck tails in 1981? Is there another style I've overlooked?

I personally prefer the early turbo tail look... The Weissach and later Turbo tail seem huge with that big flat area. I don't think my car has big enough hips to pull that off.

weissach and early turbo tails are identical dimensionally. the sc never came with the turbo (extra small rear grill) tail. The larger grills are the same between the two cars- no differences in mounting or angles.
the iroc tail was never offered on the SC, and it was a race part only for the , ta-da , the iroc cars and later the imsa rsr's. there is another tail you did not mention which is the rs 3.0 (NOT the same car as the carrera 3.0) and RSR tail. The base fiberglass was larger and the rubber edge was huge. The dimensions of which are the same as the iroc all fiberglass tail. You would not want this on your SC so it boils down to the weissach tail if you want to be correct. in searching for one, the 75 carrera tail is the same thing. 74 ducktails were one year only and were essentially outlawed by the german government for 75 on, besides yielding to a superior downforce design of the whale tails One more thing: that all rubber tail is a tank ! You would need 4 gas struts to hold the lid up. That part also deforms over time with exposure to the elements. Finally imho, its fugly !

Thanks Dave.
I'm in a tough spot... I like the idea of "correct", but don't think I would like a Turbo tail on my car! I guess there are worse problems in life!
