Duelling DEs in Rosamond

This weekend, there was both a POC Short Track event at Streets of Willow, and an Alfa-Romeo track day at the Willow Springs big track. Lots of 911s at both, but I opted for the latter, since I'm currently focused on trying to get my lap times out of the embarrassing range.

It was a great weekend, although I think I missed a few Pelicanites who might have been at one or the other event (I think I missed 'Clark Griswald' and his brake kit, for instance).

Still, it was a great weekend. I'd just flown back from Chicago after a four-day cross-country drive. Without time to shave, I configured a new system for getting my track tires to the track. Here's me on arrival:

Here's a real RS (the first one that was sold to the public?) that was at the POC event:

And here's Pelicanite Michael Marshall's recently-improved RS+ clone.

I brought my best time down from a 1:43 to a 1:41. I suspect the improvement was due to the demonic power of my number for the day. While Mark Hargett may have built "The Beast," my car at least had the Number of the Beast:

Thumbs up

A good time was had by all.

I was at the POC event. Marshal told me you had just been by, but I was out on the track.

Looks like you had some interesting cars on the big track. A couple of ferraris and a Mclaren! Not many Alfas from what I could see.

Here is a picture of Sparky from today in full track ragalia.

Unhappy

Hello Jack. I'm sorry I missed you at Willow. The car just wasn't ready (read, kick butt on Dave!). Must have been great weather, too. Was it crowded with the Alfa group?

About that line down from the balcony, that's my Achilles' heel also. I never seem to know 'where I am' at that point. If I get it right, it feels accidental. Oh well, practice makes better. BTW, it appears the beemer behind you in the pic was having some oversteer fun (or trying your line!).

Cheers. Hope to catch up with you soon.

Correction to my earlier post. The Mclaren was out there on Friday. Quite a scene, camera crew and all.

Tom, the brake cooling worked great!

I did a few unscheduled "dirt track" runs over three days and had no ground clearance problems.

A buddy had a IR thermometer and I did some testing. I disconnected the hoses from the driver side but left them on the passenger.

Basically I just went out for a normal 15 minute session, then read the temps of the rotors as soon as I got back to the pits. Not a controlled test but a good anecdotal data point.

The side with the ducting in place was about 150 degrees f cooler in front and 100 degrees f cooler in rear. The rotors weren't that hot though, in the 500 degree range. I believe the temperature delta will be even greater as the rotor temps climb.

Even so, this first data point exceeded my expectations. I plan to do some controlled tests that push the temps higher.

Incidentally the same buddy that lent the thermometer has the cool brakes kit on his car. The scoops hang noticably lower and sure enough he ripped one of them off going off track.

Wow! You guys know how to have fun! Clark...a question from the peanut gallery; how'd you get cookie cutters so wide? Do we see a trailer in Jack's future? I mean, THE TIRE RUF RACK????

The cookies are regular 15x7 wearing 225/45. The rears are riding on 1 inch spacers to fill out flares.

Those are the brand spankin' new kumho Ecsta V700 DOT R tires.

They have a bit deeper tread depth than the Victoracers. I didn't shave them but I think they need it. I found them getting loose after a 4-5 laps and temps ran high.

Otherwise it's thumbs up on these tires.
